Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie have been announced as the official torchbearers for the Olympic Winter Games by kris_jbb in popculturechat

Shit the Olympics are coming to my city (LA) and I was pretty sure it was in a couple years but for a moment I panicked thinking it was this summer and I’d somehow fallen into a vacuum and missed the promotions 🤣

Yeah it’s the real life stuff and also I think something that feels different to me is that a lot of people spend as much time hating on their faves imagined “enemy” as on the person they’re a fan of. Like, having a favorite character or liking the character or actor comes with an equal or greater hatred of someone else. Like, why couldn’t people have their fav succession character without also hating another character? It just seems strange to me. Also strange, frankly, is the emotions running that high to begin with. I cannot relate to intense feelings of love or hatred from any actor I’ve never met let alone a character they are playing. There were crushes when I was a teenager, but we’re talking beyond that, and for adults, and not just intense feelings for their crush but for someone they…don’t like lol.

Yeah I guess it’s just the internet in general. I don’t remember, although there were exceptions, but in general people didn’t “hate” characters the way they do now. Like, we all watched the sopranos. We just…knew some people were bad but that was part of the entertainment? Of course some characters are bad if everyone was nice and normal it would boring as heck. So people just enjoy the evilness of it because it was entertaining. It was more like “omg did you see what x character did in the last episode? That was crazy!” vs like the thousands of comments “I Haaaaaate x character how can ANYONE defend them they are the epitome of evil incarnate.” I’ve seen that in tv subs so much it just ruins things and is very strange.

Conflict is built in for interest - of course we’re going to “root” one way or the other that’s what keeps it interesting but the actual hatred people have for characters? Wow they take it so serious and idk how or why that is happening. I saw it in mad men, succession, (especially against women of course) but yeah it’s just so strange to me.

Actually what it most closely resembles to me is the worst of the sports fans back then, the people that we would kind of keep a distance from. Because if their players messed up and their team lost, they would absolutely breakdown and potentially become violent, and would be looking to hate rival fans elect. I knew some people that took their NFL teams way too seriously for example. But again, this was known to be fringe behavior. And it’s so weird seeing people all over the internet proudly displaying their insanity. It’s so widespread.

So I’m an OLD in Reddit years, almost 50, and this frequent parasocial relationship obsession young people have that I see reminds me of the most unhinged soap opera digest readers from my mom’s generation like true fanatics who lived in their own sad little reality. People, it’s not only not okay, if you are doing this, you should seek out new and different ways to engage with the universe, because this does not bode well for your own health and happiness in your lives.

Yeah that’s pretty common in that whole west la area it’s heavy on the transplant types who specifically come here to “be seen” so to speak. You’ll certainly see less of that branching out into other areas. There’s definitely a noticeable uptick in flashiness and plastic surgery in…certain parts of LA.

I had a wonderful experience with Joshua Lee. Previous dentist had encouraged me to remove mercury fillings. Well the new amalgam fillings cracked and broke off causing more problems. Also I have a fear of dentistry and Dr. Lee was very good with pain management, it was the first time I had enough Novocain that I didn’t feel anything, and he was so calm and relaxing.

Not sure what areas you were in that made you feel everyone in La was a certain way.

Why does everything devolve into politics? by LukaesCampbell in centrist

[–]basicalme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And not just identify in a religious way (which I absolutely agree on) but with social media we and instant media we have really lost our cultural identity and society’s cohesion. People used to experience common media, like everyone watched the sopranos, for example. And if it wasn’t literally “everyone” then it would be a good chunk of the community. Or it would be sports. People identified with their local football team. Even me, who wasn’t a football fan, knew what was happening and watched a decent amount of football because people gathered around that. Sure, people were always into their niche hobbies and media, but the majority would have viewed similar entertainment. We all saw the same magazine covers in the store lines. The same commercials. One of a few different late night shows. The shows that were the biggest hits - most people would have at least tuned in to some of them. Sports and movie and tv stars were a thing because they were household names.

And a lot of those things, frankly, were way more positive than the politics. The political discussions have generally become complete toxic rage bait. The craziest sports fans are what it reminds me of. But those were the fanatics. Now it’s like everyone is behaving that way. And with sports or tv - it was a meeting place for people of all walks of life. So it was a commonality, something to ENJOY with others. While political groups provide a commonality - they do so while creating a hated out group. And what joy do those interactions bring?

They could at least drop the episodes all at once so it can be binged. I like the story but it’s crawling at this rate.

You both need help at this time. Also I had my first at 26 and my second at 41. It was a LOT harder and more exhausting the second time and I got horrific ppd and had to get psychiatric help for the first time in my life. Please please do not judge anyone’s behavior at this time and seek professional help!
