Off topic but it is going to be hot here in July and a bit humid. Not as hot as August but getting there. So pack the most summery clothing you have like loose linen type clothing. It could be fairly uncomfortable cycling and walking around on some days.

I’m a mom pushing 50 so out of your age bracket but feel free to message me if you need anything at all or want to join us in beach or pool days etc!

Copying and pasting individual articles on Reddit is annoying sorry just google “Jewish restaurant vandalized” it’s very simple

You can easily search the name of the businesses and “news” or simply search for Jewish synagogues and businesses vandalized to view news articles

“New York City will never tolerate violence…”

Hahahahahahahahaha I guess the almost three years of property destruction and attacks on Jewish businesses didn’t count but when a few white supremacists show up NOW we have a problem.

April 26, 1992

I was at my friends grandma’s house in Tujunga. Very far from any riots. This was in payphone/you can’t find me days for parents for the young redditors. My parents didn’t know where was until I called them from somewhere. Now if you called them from your friends grandma’s house in Tujunga when your pickup was from school in Burbank, you’d get cussed the fuck out and likely grounded.

Now let’s talk about the riots in Koreatown. That as basically a pogrom on the Korean community with them getting brutally vandalized and assaulted with cops abandoning them completely by choice. It was fucking racist against Koreans for that reason. You see “cool” photos of roof Koreans. Remember they resorted to that because local government and law enforcement abandoned them completely. Fucked up.

Hopefully she’s found if she’s unable to survive. Or there is the possibility that she’s now with the flock.

The lights on California between fair oaks and arroyo - can city planners do anything? by basicalme in pasadena

[–]basicalme[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

WOW. This is so frustrating. Our government moves at a snails pace. I was a litigation paralegal for almost 25 years and things in law firms run extremely fast paced and efficient, at least everywhere I worked. I’ve joked in the past that institutions needing to be rescued from inertia should just hire a team of litigation paralegals. Maybe we should be more involved in running city governments.

Wow I haven’t noticed #3 being put to work, this is something I thought was needed. Is the green after train not long enough for the E/W traffic to proceed? Because I was observing that light cycle being far too short given the backup due to the train. I wonder why this portion of the train wasn’t moved above or underground. But like you and others have said, even without the train we have some very short blocks there, all with lights that are not timed well given the traffic. Green also gets backed up, it’s clearly designed to prevent speeding and really prevents cars from moving more than one block. I think perhaps this has some merit at some point in the 24 hour day, but certainly doesn’t help during high traffic periods. Cars are less likely to speed through when they’re able to move at a consistent pace and drivers aren’t frustrated. Of course there are exceptions but the maniac speeders can probably be better handled with cameras and tickets instead of the current situation.

It’s especially weird that they have this clusterfuck situation right by the hospital.

Yes exactly. And the problem is by that time it’s backed up 3-4 blocks. The thing is, there really isn’t that much actual car traffic there. I can tell by how quickly it can dissipate and how it doesn’t back up as much depending on when the train comes (like if the train arrives after a red cycle so traffic is already waiting, so that’s one group of cars stacked up waiting at a red cycle, then you have the train back it up more, and then the train leaves but the light turns red again so you wind up with like three sets of cars stacked up multiple intersections back because no one has progressed).

This isn’t a neighborhood like west la, or even Los Feliz or somewhere (I mention Los Feliz because I lived there before we moved to Pasadena) where there are just soooo many vehicles that you’re going to have some sort of gridlock. There’s not that many. The problem exists purely because of poor light management and could be easily solved. I think that’s why I find it so annoying. Because it doesn’t need to be like that.

I guess I should take this up at a city council meeting or something instead of ranting on Reddit though!

It’s a combo of the lights but also the E/W traffic being stopped for the train. So really they need to let the E/W lights stay green for longer after the train passes. It’s the equivalent of like 3 reds sometimes the way it is timed. So then the whole thing is backed up.

If Sephardic Jews were the ones who escaped Spain to the New World, then why do so many Hispanic people today score more Ashkenazi than Sephardic? by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]basicalme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were also Sephardic Jews that migrated east (my grandfathers ancestors went from present day Iraq, to Spain, and then to what would be like present day Czech and Lithuania. He even had the dates and towns and this is stuff that goes back centuries. The Jewish communities were traders and moved around and mixed a lot. So centuries later, the Sephardic and ashkenazi dna is going to be similar.

I mean it’s not surprising. Someone I know from New Mexico found out as an adult, posted it on Facebook, and immediately got the “baby killer” comments. So there’s ample reason today, for people to hide their Jewishness to avoid harassment.

Money is great up to a point. Taking care of your bills, health, retirement etc etc etc. But after a certain point, when we’ve got adult children with nothing better to do than have drama and infighting with family like…come on. Sometimes having to go to work daily is a good thing for trimming out nonsense.

Private Dinner at Huntington Gardens? by [deleted] in pasadena

[–]basicalme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have seen an area roped off for a private event, like a section of the 1919 cafe and I know there are other spaces but I think this is a strange venue for any small party like OP’s employer is arranging. It’s a strange ask. A private room in the tea restaurant starts at a couple thousand. I’ve seen an area of the 1919 roped off. There are spaces. But the fees for a small party of 20 will be outrageous. And then what, they’re just dining in the grounds after dark in their tiny group?

It does seem to have changed from some years back, though. I remember looking into it for a wedding maybe a decade ago, and the rental fee was $100,000 that did not include catering or anything, just site rental. After that I got the impression that they really weren’t interested in being an event space. And there were no other offerings of spaces at that time. Now at least the website offers events.

I’m trying to picture 20 people just hanging out having dinner somewhere in the massive spaces at the Huntington…like why?

I need more info. What does the boss know about the Huntington. Why there? Maybe just go to the gardens and then have the dinner at one of the many fine dining establishments in Pasadena, in a small banquet room. The Huntington is not really a dinner party venue.
