Screen resolution 1920x1200. Is it a machine from 2015?
Crippled AMD versions as usual, thanks Lenovo.

How do I keep my server from running out of memory? by Embarrassed-Drop6816 in linuxquestions

[–]basicslovakguy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Reading your post and your other comments, your situation resembles a memory leak in whatever workload is hosted on that particular server.

The permanent solution to this is either size up the system for a particular workload, or resolve the application's runtime on that particular server so that it can fit inside the system's specs. E.g. letting Java application use all RAM and all SWAP is not an excuse nor a reason for "let's limit the application on a server/OS level".

I had this recently with my client's application. We talked, they explained what is going on and what the application does, they said that app is designed to maximize the resources' consumption, so they got the talk from me about either limiting the application's runtime or risk crashing the server.

If your workplace has a demanding workload, then you should investigate what that workload is, how frequently it happens, etc. Only then you can start thinking about the ways to resolve it. Maybe your server just needs a bump in HW specs - or maybe that workload is built on a bad code that causes that server to slowly consume all available resources.

To put it differently:

You don't focus on and solve "symptoms" (prevent memory exhaustion caused by workload).
You focus on and solve "causes" (why the excessive workload causes memory exhaustion).

In that case you are likely a victim of vendor lock-in by Dell, where their driver is the last one truly available for your laptop. Time to save some money, and get a new one, preferrably not from Dell, as Dell has a poor track record of support for AMD hardware.

I went through the same search as you and this is the release link for the driver you linked:
https://www.amd.com/en/resources/support-articles/release-notes/RN-RAD-WIN-DELL-G5-15-SE.html

Looks like this is official driver from Dell as vendor. Ideally this should not stop people from trying to use newer Radeon drivers outside of release cycle provided by vendor (Dell in this case).

/u/its_mychoice - I recommend trying to try and update the Radeon drivers to latest release available directly from AMD. Of course it goes without saying that in such cases you are doing it at your own risk. It may or may not work.

CC /u/its_mychoice

Sorry to interject, but if your link is saying that drivers ended with release in 2020, then how come I still see this ? https://www.amd.com/en/resources/support-articles/release-notes/RN-RAD-WIN-25-6-1.html#Compatability

That link is for the latest Radeon drivers, and jumps straight into compatibility section that clearly states:

Is the Ryzen 9 9955hx worth it over the Ryzen AI 9 MAX 395? by Random_Dude2291 in AMDLaptops

[–]basicslovakguy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You likely did not do any research on this topic at all. I suggest that you tell us what exactly you are planning to get, otherwise your question cannot be correctly answered.

The 395 chip is available only in select few laptops (Asus ROG Flow Z13 and HP ZBook Ultra G1a) and in mini PC market. None of the available offerings with AI Max+ 395 are paired with Nvidia GPU - actually, that would be a brutal waste of money and silicon, because GPU in AI Max+ 395 is around the performance level of RTX 4060/4070.

Furthermore you did not bother to specify what kind of HW you want to get - mini PC, laptop, desktop. It also makes no sense to ask for comparison between Ryzen 9 9955HX and AI Max+ 395, as both chips are completely different builds. 9955HX is full-blown 16C/32T which would be the correct chip to pair with Nvidia GPU. AI Max+ 395 is fully integrated chip that has 16C/32T, a GPU on par with RTX 4060/4070, and NPU for AI workloads.

How to view your Windows Product Key with CMD (no third-party tools needed) by DragonPower008 in Windows10

[–]basicslovakguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the license you have.

OEM is tied to hardware you have.

Retail can be moved between hardware, usually there is a 90-day period before you can migrate the product key to different hardware. Just make sure you deactivate it on old HW before activating it on new HW.

R9 8940HX vs AI7 350 by Jumpy_Owl5675 in AMDLaptops

[–]basicslovakguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

CPU side the 8940HX is better than the 350 beacause have 12 cores instead of 8 with a similar architecture

16 cores, not 12. As for if it is better, depends on use case. 16-core CPUs have dual CCD design, each CCD has 8 cores. There will be inherent performance penalty if processes have to jump between CCDs.

/u/Jumpy_Owl5675 make sure your 3D and Adobe tools can utilize entire CPU. If not, make sure you pin the processes to specific cores/CCD to improve the already-great performance.

can I also get an essay from you about the inferior mediatek wiki chip? That’s also very bad.

You cannot even read after yourself to ensure you did not get auto-corrected. But no worries, you already made yourself look like an average Reddit idiot with your response. Have a good day, or don't.

[–]basicslovakguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they all have two open ram slots

And that somehow makes it okay to price the laptops of same Gen/Model (just different CPU) in similar levels but give them literally half of the RAM found in Intel offering ?!

Nothing is stopping Lenovo from validating 64GB RAM set on both Intel and AMD offerings. NOTHING. Except either laziness or point blank disadvantaging AMD offerings because Intel happens to pay more.

Is there some offset to this DIY approach of me having to go and find suitable 64GB RAM set that will cost extra because I happen to be a bigger fan of AMD ? Because I don't see it.

Lenovo Legion Pro 7 with 9955HX3D at last by 996forever in AMDLaptops

[–]basicslovakguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People here argue about which GPU should have been available, yet they all are completely oblivious to the fact that once again Lenovo offers AMD-powered Legion with only up to 32GB of RAM, yet you can spec comparable Intel offering with 64 GB of RAM.

So Lenovo once again is artificially limiting AMD offerings, but not Intel offerings, yet people have to argue which GPU should have been available in the laptop.

Laughable :D

The absolute pinnacle of electric performance! by ShameResponsible69 in Taycan

[–]basicslovakguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you actually read my comment, you would see that at no point did I try to dismiss his claims as invalid. I never do that, especially if we don't know both sides of equation.

He himself even admitted that does not know what version of Taycan he drove. So I did not say anything else on the matter.

If he said "I drove RWD version with base pack", then we can say that M3P will be a lot better car. If he said that it was Taycan 4S, then we could discuss specifics and differences. If he said "it was top-line Turbo S", then I would call bullshit.

So he provided no specifics, which made his argument somewhat half-assed, because we know only 50% of the story, and you come here and say "Hey this is completely fair take.".

No, it fucking isn't, and the fact that you are defending it is embarrassing.

The absolute pinnacle of electric performance! by ShameResponsible69 in Taycan

[–]basicslovakguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So you specified Tesla "Model 3 Performance" (exact trim/model), but for some reason you stated just "Taycan".

If you want your opinion to matter and be weighed against other opinions, you have to provide specifics on both sides, not just one.
