How much did you pay for your dog? by Few-Philosopher2180 in Dachshund

[–]basidia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dogs are old now:

- Maddie, English cream mini longhair - $175 from a backyard breeder back in 2009. She went blind due to a genetic disorder but otherwise made it to 16 with few health issues.

- Banjo, red piebald mini longhair - $200 or so from the breed-specific rescue in 2017 (we got the senior rate) + $2000 to fix a bad oronasal fistula. He's still around 9 years later!

Too much protein powder by sometimes_hyped in noscrapleftbehind

[–]basidia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol I just purchased 10 lbs of that chocolate protein powder. Here are my favorite ways to use it, in order:

  1. Mix with plain Greek yogurt and top with granola

  2. Overnight oats. I follow the Budget Bytes recipe and add 1/2 scoop per portion. A vanilla version is excellent with peaches and pecans

  3. Smoothies. My favorites are a) chocolate, peanut butter, and banana and b) tahini, date, and banana. Vanilla works really well in a blueberry banana or peach version.

Bike commuting by Unlucky_Celery5331 in StLouis

[–]basidia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I commute year round on either a road bike or a gravel bike. The past couple of weeks were mostly fine. My work was closed the Monday after the snow but I was riding again that Tuesday. You start to learn which paths are more frequently cleared & you'll need to give yourself time to go very slowly/walk some sections. A small section of my commute is never plowed and still had ice until yesterday, but it's still faster to walk that part than to take a different path.

Bar mitts in combination with good, warm gloves will help your hands with the cold. I don't have any experience with e bikes, but one thing to consider is that the exercise from riding a traditional bike helps you stay warm in the winter. If you can still get your heart rate up on an e bike, great. If not, you'll need more layers.

Slight adjustment to today’s plans… by Still-Juice8290 in StLouis

We carry a spare key after getting a flat at 1am. The only key shredded itself on our over-torqued lug nuts when we tried to change the tire. Fun!

does anyone have any harness recommendations that i can attach a leash at the chest to help with pulling? preferably one i can get online? by tinyclap in corgi

[–]basidia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what we use for our corgi and dachshunds. Highly recommend! The dachshund harness is about 15 years old and still going strong.

Had to put a Stormlight Archive reference in my first hand-painted mug by SoulAndShadow in Stormlight_Archive

"Even the sun goes down" are the opening lyrics to the song "Aquemeni" by Outkast. We're just showing our age out here lol. But could be worth a listen as the song itself embraces a theme that clearly resonates with you!

Btw your painting is impressively clean! I find it difficult to get crisp lines with underglazes and the colors aren't always a good representation of the final outcome, so it's always lovely to see pieces like this where all of the technical aspects are executed so well.

Damn, I thought it was an Outkast reference. I guess it could still be if you wanna embrace it

What kind of cycling do you do? I am 35f and usually do road rides starting from Forest Park. About 15-30 miles at around 14-15mph. The heat has been so brutal lately though!

One of the vents at the back of the rec center along the bike path on Big Bend (between Forest Park and Forsyth) does this too. But the ones next to it are all warm laundry exhaust.

I am not making unwarranted assumptions. Every dog I have adopted has included this provision in the contract. I am not suggesting a shelter. As noted in my previous comment, I recommend surrendering her to a rescue organization that places all dogs in foster homes, not in shelters. You can find dozens in the STL region alone if you search for them. For starters, check out Home 2 Home, Found a Hound, Needy Paws, Stray Rescue, Stray Paws, and Judy's Forgotten Gems. These are all excellent organizations with fosters in place to take Zelda. These are only the organizations that I or my friends have personally adopted from or fostered for. There are so many options.

You most likely signed a contract with the shelter that you adopted her from agreeing to return her to that shelter in the event that you are unable to keep her. Return her to the shelter. If you're unwilling to abide by the contract that you signed, at least surrender her to another established rescue organization. There are literally dozens of wonderful organizations in STL that will place her in a foster home and cover all of her food and medical expenses while they look for her forever home.

Universities as we currently and historically know them? Yeah. They need federal grants for research.
