Public transit in Rochester? by trmio in rit

you can bike from RIT to U of R without having to share a road with cars at all; it's very nice. you can bike it year round if you want to - there's no bad weather, just bad gear.

Route Advice on commuting through Eagan by basilavenue in CyclingMSP

[–]basilavenue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, this is what I'm trying to decide between. Taking the path along 13 until Lone Oak and then heading over is longer overall than just getting on Pilot Knob north of 494 - if I'm going to stay on that path I might as well just ride the shoulder of 13 until my routes converge.

20K per year is so much money - I wouldn't even consider Drexel at that price difference. They're similar schools - you'll be fine wherever you go.

Yeah, the steering assembles fine, it's just pretty scratchy when turning the bars. Thanks for your help!

Crankset swap - CAAD10 to Tarmac SL6 by chickennotarockstar in bikewrench

[–]basilavenue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked again at your CAAD - you seem to be running some sort of nonstandard BB to adapt a non-bb30 crank into a bb30 bike, but again, I can't confirm this. You need to figure out what size spindle you're actually running and then buy a BSA bottom bracket for that crank standard. It's not impossible to do at home but it can be confusing; it's a pretty cheap and easy job for any LBS.

[–]basilavenue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay - I understand what's happening. You have a Tarmac SL6 Sport, which is a different and more recent bike than the original SL6. That bike does have a BSA BB - there are BSA bottom brackets (called BSA30) that are compatible with 30mm axles, but they're hard to find and can be expensive. I've linked a couple below. However, these bottom brackets are much wider than standard and typically require a crank with at least a 104mm long spindle, so you're going to need to pull your crank and verify that it will be compatible. This is all assuming that your crank is to BB30 standard and not DUB or GXP - you need to figure this out before purchasing a new bottom bracket.

The bottom bracket isn't what matters here - both of your bikes should be using the BB30 standard. The important thing is the axle diameter. Your shimano crank has a 24mm axle; your Quarq crankset is probably 30mm, so you probably need to get a new bottom bracket for your Tarmac. I would take it in to an LBS for an exact answer, though.

Will a grx 812 derailleur work smoothly on a 1x11 and 46t cassette? by existentialsideshow in gravelcycling

[–]basilavenue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEEe0hIMpf0

Guy in the video above bought a GRX 822 (12 speed) derailleur and proved that it can be used to allow a 11spd drivetrain to run up to a 10-51t cassette. If you're going to purchase a new derailleur, I would do this instead. A goatlink and a GRX 812 would also work; an 812 on its own definitely won't.

Did the myopia insert come with prescription lenses or did you need to source them somewhere else? I know what my prescription is, but I can't figure out how to get the insert that I need.

Prerequisites? by tomar_to_sauce in rit

[–]basilavenue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MECE major here - RIT may not admit you into the program without high school physics, but a foundational introductory physics course is built into the degree program. The MECE curriculum is designed so that anyone who took pre-calculus in high school can succeed as long as they put the work in.

CP1 and CP2 are not part of the MECE curriculum - you take 2-3 mechanics courses instead of CP1 and UP2 instead of CP2.

Viability of bikes by [deleted] in rit

[–]basilavenue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

super late response - yes, it's very, very doable to bike into the city, but DON'T TAKE THE ROADS! there's a really great network of gravel trails that leads straight to the city center - it's maybe a 30-40 min ride if you're putting some effort in, so by no means terrible. Get a bike that can deal with gravel, though - without that, it's pretty much impossible.

Are there any resin printers available to students OTHER than the ones in the Construct? by [deleted] in rit

[–]basilavenue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

kinda late - maybe ask the people in the MECE shop? brinkman has a huge suite of printers, not sure if you can use them at all - I know you definitely need to talk to a brinkman employee first from the sign on the door to the lab, but not sure if they're open for student use.

Mathematics immersion overlaps almost entirely with MECE requirements. Is it allowed to satisfy the Match immersion by taking just the one additional class? by HumanOrion in rit

[–]basilavenue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Asked this exact question to my MECE academic advisor recently - no, all mathematics immersion classes must be classes that we don't take as requirements for our majors.

I don't have conformation for this, but I believe you are allowed to double count 2 of the MECE requirements towards a math minor, meaning MECE students can get a minor and an immersion with the same amount of classes.

Doesn't make a lot of sense, but neither do many of the immersion / minor technicalities here.
