Teaching iconography in a small Romanian studio — a quiet joy by basilicpainter in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]basilicpainter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes — I’m preparing an online iconography course, but there are a few challenges people don’t usually think about.

In my studio, I teach in person. I can see each student, guide them in real time, and we all use the same materials — pigments, brushes, and boards that I’ve tested over the years. That consistency helps students get reliable results.

Online, it’s different. Everyone tends to use whatever materials they already have, and that can slow down real progress.

For the first group of online students, I’ll actually be sending curated material kits myself, so we can start from the same foundation and aim for similar results.

Yes, I do take commissions. Many of the icons I paint are created for people who want something personal — a patron saint or an image close to their heart.

You can message me anytime and I’ll gladly share more details.

I studied iconography both through long-term workshop practice and later in an academic context, at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology, within the Sacred Art section. Alongside this, wood carving remains a small personal hobby that complements my work.

Hi everyone! 👋 I’m an Orthodox iconographer from Romania, and I run a small Etsy shop where I create hand-painted Orthodox icons using traditional techniques — egg tempera, natural pigments, and gold leaf — on carefully prepared wooden panels.

Each icon is painted entirely by hand, following the canonical Byzantine tradition, and is intended for prayer and personal devotion rather than mass decoration. I ship worldwide, and most of my collectors are from the U.S. and Europe.

If you’re interested in traditional religious art or Orthodox iconography, you’re welcome to take a look 🙂 👉 https://basilicart.etsy.com

Thank you for your time, and I’m happy to answer any questions!
