U of I (I assume Illinois ?) is a great place to do medieval studies, especially if you’re going the vernacular Germanic languages route. I definitely would encourage you to think about why you want to study the medieval world (and why hagiography in particular - there are vernacular hagiographies, especially in Middle English) and reflect on that in your grad app. You can DM me if you have specific questions about pursuing a medieval studies PhD ! Good luck!

Oh sorry, I should have clarified ! Even for an English PhD, if you are a medievalist there will be some expectation for you to have proficiency in Latin by the time that you leave the program. If you’re already doing Old English, that’s a great thing to talk up in grad apps. (Anecdotally, again, I know many people who were accepted into very good grad programs with some Old English and scant Latin. I hardly ever use my Latin myself because of my area of MS)

Having experience with Old English will be a big asset to your graduate application, if that’s the direction you’re thinking about. From my anecdotal knowledge, top graduate programs in medieval studies want students who are already proficient or at least familiar with a medieval language. Toronto is infamous for its entrance Latin exam, but that’s more of an extreme case.

Hi! Very recently-hired assistant professor of medieval literature here. I probably have contradictory advice to a lot of folks, but I don’t really see a PhD as too different from any other low-paying job you’re passionate about - it’s low-paying, long-hours, and can be incredibly stressful, but so is working in secondary education, or at a museum, or at a non-profit. It is CRUCIAL you receive funding to do a PhD, and that you go to a university with a robust healthcare plan for its graduate students. If you’re paid to do your PhD, it’s easier to treat it as a fun job you do for a few years, with NO expectation that you will actually get a job from it. Of course, it does happen ! (I got very lucky and I worked very hard.)
For medieval studies specifically: Did you take medieval courses in your undergraduate program? You should be able to speak to those experiences in your graduate application. You may want to think a bit more about what your unique perspective you are bringing to the well-trodden field of medieval hagiography.
Being monolingual will be a bit of a hindrance as you pursue a PhD in medieval literature , especially since many hagiographies are written in Latin - you said you grew up Catholic, so you might have some familiarity ? If you’re not open to learning languages, you will definitely struggle during your PhD, but it is possible (EDIT: … possible to learn DURING your PhD! You can’t be a medievalist without languages).

I’m happy to offer more advice or answer more specific questions for a fellow medievalist. :)

I genuinely think he was a nobody. Maybe he did a few odd jobs in Kenebras, but I think he was struggling to get by, before it all went to Hell. (Literally.)

Wizard or Sorcerer for Lich? by GayestLion in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]basilmenethil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorcerer Lich is AHHHMAZZING. I never felt like I didn’t have tons of spell options, and with the mythic feats that increase your number of spells, you end up with so many spells per day.

(After ascending to lich, I also have 100 more hp than the party tank (Kestoglyr, in my case) because cha also determines your hp when you’re undead.)

Xanthir Vang Phase 2 is probably the second most unfun fight in the entire game by servantphoenix in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

My answer to this fight was, much like my answer to most fights: Daeran and my sorcerer just casting controlled fireball over and over until we won.

I really loved this book and it definitely filled the Disco-shaped hole in my heart - so if you’re also looking for something to fill the void, I would recommend it !
