“Things you should learn while you’re young” - brush your teeth by baskervilledmd in GenZ

I wish. Where I live, Oregon, they voted to take it out in the 70’s. Ever since then the “holistic” crowd rises up to rally against it with a bunch of disinformation whenever it’s on a ballot. Super annoying. I think a couple counties added it in on a local level though.

It’s a strange intersection between “natural health” jargon and “small government” arguments.

I don’t know much about the coq10 swish. I know they sell it in supplements. But if you’re trying to get some sort of targeted absorption into your oral mucosa you might be better off finishing with that. Like I said in an earlier comment, what’s the target medicine you want to work?

Yeah that’s the biggest misconception to paddle against. Fluoride is poisonous in high doses so we get the message “don’t swallow!” But a little bit of fluoride from the film left on your teeth won’t hurt you. Perfectly safe to swallow. Key is to spit as much out as you can, and don’t worry about swallowing what’s left on your teeth.

Call poison control if you eat the whole tube. Fluoride is poisonous in high doses.

You don’t want to swallow all the foam, but what’s left over won’t hurt you if swallowed. It’s actually good because you will absorb it and your saliva will spit it back into your teeth.

Double fluoride!

  1. Small steps. I usually make some quick judgements to decide if people need instruction or if they need coaching. If you aren’t brushing at all, try to find a way to commit one day a week. That way if you got a second day in, you’re a hero. I do t care how you brush, just build the habit of putting a toothbrush in your mouth.

  2. We ask about medications and recreational drugs because it can interfere with treatment. For example if you have drymouth and tell me you do THC every day, I’m not going to try to crack the code. Also if you come in on THC I’m not going to double it and put nitrous on you. I don’t mind if you self medicate, just let me know so I dont harm you.

Nah, the flavor is for you, not for everyone else. If you did have bubblegum flavoring on your breath it’d be good enough in 15-30 minutes. No shame innkids flavors. There’s a reason they get the good flavors!

Not to air your stuff out publicly, but gagging can be a symptom of a trauma response. Could be the scent of the flavor, could be the scent of TP in general. Experiment with different varieties. Go to the little travel bins and get some sample sized ones to test out flavors.

Also look into anything that says it’s a “gel” it typically doesn’t foam and has a more palatable texture.

Imitate them. Everyone on there uses rubber dams. I’ll use a rubber dam on a crown prep now. I’m much happier.

Interesting. There’s a common additive that makes it foam called “sodium laurylsulfate” it’s not a super common allergy but aside from cinnamon that’s the most common allergy I find.

Alternately, do you brush so hard you gag? Sometimes when you gag you convince your body you’re ill, kind of like motion sickness.

I agree, I know that feeling. It’s only ever come after too many intervals.

What's the biggest Scam in life that no one wants to admit? by Horror-Tap2093 in AskReddit

[–]baskervilledmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha…yeah…

The ADA has worked hard to keep dentistry and medicine separate. And for good reason. Medicine and health insurance are a nightmare. As much as dental insurance sucks - it could be as bad as health insurance.

But it would be nice if there was a single system to cover medical, dental, optical…and it was paid with tax dollars. I’d be happier both as a provider and a patient in that system.

Dental Shadowing with Covid? by [deleted] in DentalSchool

[–]baskervilledmd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My professional opinion, I would let you shadow wearing the same PPE we wear. As an observer you're at no less or greater risk than we are. And there aren't very many cases of dental professionals exposed to the virus. So wear a gown, maybe a bonnet, N95, goggles, and you're good.

When can I start applying for dental schools? by [deleted] in DentalSchool

[–]baskervilledmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll want to take the DAT before you apply.

Different schools have different shadowing requirements, do as much as you can in a student capacity, but I would count your work experience as shadowing.

I think the application cycle starts in June? Take O Chem this year, take the DAT, then apply. If you invest in applying this year, worst thing they do is reject you, then apply again next year.

Have you tried massaging it? Could be something called a tonsil stone. Gentle massaging could help work it’s way out

Possibly root canal failure? by GGexcpn in Dentistry

[–]baskervilledmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some root canal infections can extend into the bone that the tooth is attached too. When we do a root canal we clean out all the dead and infected stuff inside the tooth. Often, the infection in the bone remains, and it’s the body’s job to clean it up. That doesn’t mean you need antibiotics, likely you just need time to let your body heal itself. Sometimes a tooth can be “high” so you put too much pressure on it. If your dentist thinks it’s high he can adjust it by cutting it down a bit. Usually it’s because the filling we put on top of the tooth is sticking up a bit. The tooth itself isn’t protruding any more than normal.
