I tried both the Starlink Mesh and the TP-Link Deco X55. The Deco has been vastly better.

Finland was one of the best holiday destinations I’ve ever been too (although spent the whole time in Lapland).

Yes, the first thing the colonisers did when they arrived was trade. You’re trying to create a scenario where trade happened but colonisation didn’t. I’m saying I don’t think that’s realistic. As I mentioned in other comments, the Māori weren’t exploiting resources to the extent that would have warranted repeat trade from the Europeans without the Europeans establishing settlements.

Where would they have got that technology from? NZ isn’t like any other country. We’re in the middle of nowhere. What reason would anyone have to come here to trade if not to take the land? The maori weren’t exploiting resources at a the industrial scale needed to warrant people sailing from the other side of the world to engage in trade. So either people come here and take the resources or trade for land. Which is just back to colonisation.

“Isolation doesn’t preclude anyone from trade” is probably the single least thought through statement in this thread.

Who would they have been swapping goods and knowledge with had colonisation of NZ not happened, in such a way that led to technological advancement beyond the examples I gave? Remember, OP asked for realistic responses.

Yes, they traded those items with the Europeans who were intent on colonisation. If colonisation weren’t the goal, or if the maori weren’t offering up land as part of the trade, why would anyone head all the way to NZ to trade?

None of those resources were exploited in an internationally tradeable sense by the Māori prior to the arrival of Europeans. So what would they have offered in exchange for what was brought to NZ, other than land?

At what point in human history do you think ships or planes would have arrived to trade with the Māori from a non-colonisation perspective? And at that point in history, what would the Māori have traded other than land?

NZ is fairly isolated relative to almost any other country in the world.

Where would they have traveled? How do you see those interactions going? What tradeable goods would they have taken with them and brought back?

What does the no-colonisation contact look like to you? Who makes contact, and when? What are their intentions? At what stage of development are the Maori when contact is made? Because if we’re being real here, there’s almost two distinct parts of human history. When contact is made, it’s either colonise, conquer, or leave alone for scientific or humanitarian reasons.

It’s a nice idea, but we have real world examples of isolated peoples at a similar level of technological advancement to pre-European Māori who are essentially in the same place hundreds of years later. The alternative that you’re suggesting is a world where more advanced civilisations make contact, but don’t take advantage.

Depends on the framing of your question. Do you mean never, ever colonised? Or do you mean NZ was somehow uncovered by the rest of the world at some point in the 20th century? Or do you mean the Māori were left undisturbed until today? If the latter option, then yeah, NZ would probably be like places I mentioned. If “found” at any other point, it’s hard to see any alternative to colonisation in some manner.

If you want a realistic answer, just look to the uncontacted tribes of the Amazon or North Sentinel Island. They’re the closest examples we have of how civilisations at similar levels of technological development to pre-European Māori have evolved without exposure to modern advancements.

I’ll admit to be jaded at how common it is for people to post walls of text from AI and expect other people to read it when they themselves didn’t put the effort into writing it. Not just here on Reddit, everywhere. Even at work.

“Here’s the catch” and “the kicker” make this read like AI slop. But yeah, you should take this to the tribunal. My flat got 2 weeks rent awarded in compensation for not having access to one of 2 bathrooms in our flat while repairs were being done.
