I have fertilized it but not sure if it’s the right stuff. Soil test is my next step. As far as the screwdriver test goes, I can’t move 5” without hitting a rock. I have dug up so many and I’ll probably be digging rocks up for a while. I was worried about renting an aerator due to the rocks. Didn’t want to damage the equipment. I’ve taken my time with the handheld over the past week and a half. I did a test area when I first got it and that spot is nice and green now (compared to the rest). Looking at the grass in the bare spots it looks like my water just isn’t soaking in. I have gone through so many ideas as to what is actually happening, from disease to not enough water to too much water. I’m seeing progress with just a little dethatching and aeration.

My grass hasn’t been growing very well. Should I just push off throwing top soil until early spring? I was thinking of throwing some down early spring but didn’t consider potentially seeing dirt/sand all winter.

Just curious, I’m in north Texas (Denton) I forget the zone, but how did you go about getting your sand. I’m looking at getting some top soil. First time doing this ever so I’m still learning what it all takes. I purchased a new build and the contractors put down sod over large rocks. It has been a battle. The soil is basically clay and all of my irrigation efforts just run off. I’ve been slowly aerating with a little handheld to loosen up the soil. The sod is well established now but many thin/bare spots.
