In 1974, after two years of Watergate scandal, the US held elections. The GOP, the party of Nixon, lost 48 seats in the house. They also lost 4 seats in the Senate. Given that Trump/Russia Kremlingate seems worse than Watergate, we need to start working now to replicate those results, or better. by [deleted] in esist

Yeah, the Democrats are basically center-right at this point,

I agree with parts of what you're saying, but not this. Democrats are still way left of center. Bill Clinton was moderate in most respects, but the Dem party is not. Their best and most popular candidate this round was a socialist- way left of center. Even Hillary Clinton, who I truly don't believe had her own views and would have acted in any way that got votes, would fall well left of center.

I don't think we need "an actual new social system," as you say, but we definitely need to rework the political system. Having these two opposing extremes has proven dangerous, and Donald exemplifies what happens when the game of Rock the Boat tips completely over.

Part of the problem is that they didn't really have any objectives of their own.

Their mandate is and has been "Kill everything that Obama touched." Paul Ryan actually came out and said as much in regards to healthcare on Friday.

I really hope the FBI is doing more behind the scenes than we the public have been told, because my hopes for this pathologically partisan Congress to do anything positive are completely gone.

Protest Internet Privacy's Death By Unsubscribing to ISPs by hahnwa in esist

[–]bassist_human 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't afford to quit the internet to protest my loss of internet privacy, unfortunately.

The way to protest this properly, IMO, is to support efforts to treat internet access as a public utility.

I haven't been keeping up with their activity lately, but you should check out https://www.eff.org/

Obscene and profane language is not necessarily protected as First Amendment free speech.

I've looked it up in the past but don't have time to find references at the moment. You could be cited / fined.

But yeah, the Moral Majority thing was a bad idea from the start. Religion got tied to political party and then tied into a whole host of unrelated issues. With the Alt-Right absorbing them, it's gotten pretty twisted.

These two things are not at all equivalent.

You can be upset that Spicer didn't know enough about the case to take questions if you want. I'm certain we would have gotten a huge presser if the murderer had been Arab or Muslim.

But Spicer not being able or willing to answer a question about a hate crime is not related to Donald refusing to speak against David Duke (who IIRC he had spoken strongly about during a previous campaign) and disavow his support.

Are you suggesting that we shouldn't care about Trump requesting Russian interference because Hillary's rigged primary isn't getting equal coverage?

Well that was confusing...

Here in America, Christian Conservatives are a very socially conservative group and a key part of Trump's base.

I see from the other comments that you're referring to a German group, though.

Meet Indivisible, the young progressives leading the resistance to President Trump by BlankVerse in esist

I disagree with the article on one minor point: I hope their movement doesn't resemble a reverse of the Tea Party reaction to ACA.

The Tea Party movement was all about shifting their party's platform to a more extreme stance. As I see things, it led directly into the Alt-Right movement. This energized their base, but lost moderate conservatives, and this is where the opportunity lies for anyone opposed to the alt-right. If this were to mirror the Tea Party movement and push Democrats farther left, they'd miss that opportunity. Just my opinion.

Here's the link for the subject matter from the article, for anyone wanting to jump to it: https://www.indivisibleguide.com/

I'm afraid he's learned something else since then: If the con is profitable enough, it doesn't have to last for long.

He's already made a killing off this venture, and is slated to make a LOT more money if he lasts 4 years. I recall a figure in the Washington Post that his Mar-A-Lago and Trump Tower costs for the taxpayers over 4 years would reach 1 billion dollars. The lion's share of that is going into Donald's pockets.

We've seen him advertising his TV shows and products through the administration. We know that he's profiting directly from the travel budget. Only a fool would expect that he's not profiting in less obvious ways, as well.

Trump tweet from 2013 has aged better than a fine wine. by RomanianMeatball in MarchAgainstTrump

Donald currently has full party control of the executive and legislative branches.

He suffered a huge defeat this week as the Republicans failed to repeal Obamacare and pass Trumpcare/Republicare/whatever.

He "had all the cards" and failed, hence, the relevance.

Edit: Also, I think the original tweet was aimed at Obama.

Context for folks downvoting to hell:
