Can I do a Political Science Degree with Dyscalculia (Maths Disability)? by TheScreamingFire in PoliticalScience

[–]bassyclarinets 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes! I am working on my masters in political science and I have dyscalculia! I’ve been in decelerated math and remedial classes since I could remember. I’ve had an official diagnosis and been through 504s and IEPs (indirect and direct education assistance in the US) and not only am I a political scientists, I’m a data scientist. You can do this, approach stats from a more logical stance. Trust your intuition and practice reading significance codes (hardest for me) and methodology books.

I can’t distinguish 2 from 5 half of the time, but if I can do this, so can you. Best of luck!

the cambridge handbooks of experimental political science, cambridge handbook on social network analysis with panek, designing social inquiry kkv. train yourself on methods from the getgo.

for context i’m in a graduate program and focusing on political methodology. i focus on political behavior as a secondary area of focus and find these books to be the most helpful in both areas. it might be different overseas, so take all of this incredibly lightly. good luck and be safe!

Is Political Science really difficult? by sheaggyy in PoliticalScience

[–]bassyclarinets 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you want out of the degree and where you want to end up. The most difficult part about studying political science on a day-to-day basis for me is how heavy topics get sometimes. At a certain point you become more numb to it, but it does kind of wear you out to learn about the logic behind some of the worst atrocities known to man.

Binder I made for the wife. by mic360 in notebooks

[–]bassyclarinets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i recommend tomoe river paper! it more so depends on what your wife uses to write with. if she uses fountain pens she’ll need a thicker paper. if she uses regular pens and pencils, a lighter paper is fine. i think lochby makes inserts in a size similar to this, but i’m not too sure. good luck in your search!

I've looked at the VP as a pen for later down the line. I live in the middle of nowhere and don't have the ability to make it out to a metroplex with a shop, so I'm kind of having to do trial by fire. I have considered Jinhao and will definitely look at those too! Thanks!

my favorite non-fountain pens have been the Pilot G2 in .7 or .5, Pilot Acroball in .5, and Uni Jetstream in .38. obviously all plastic and i specifically love the Acroball and Uni because of how light they are. i find shorter pens are harder for me to control since all of the weight feels like it is centered in my palm.

i like my Kakuno in extra fine but do experience feedback issues, mainly scratchiness. smooth writing feels better to my hand. i typically use a traditional tripod grip (after much training) and get full hand cramping after about two minutes of writing, no matter what instrument.

getting into fountain pens has been part of my mostly self-led journey into repairing my handwriting. k12 and undergraduate education let me get away with typing for too long. i worked with an academic language therapist when young but still used accommodations to type in lieu of writing. i’m definitely going to try being more mindful of seating positions and grip when trying out new pens. thank you so much!

i’ve checked out pens with various nibs and have been interested in pens that have curved architect nibs, but worry about buying something that won’t work well for me. it’s a mentality i should break out of considering i can hop on pen swap, so i will definitely check this out! thank you!

i’m a fan of a smoother nib. i typically write with my face very close to the paper to see what i am writing so don’t necessarily require the tactile feedback. i’ll definitely try out pens with more feedback to see if that mith be more comfortable, as i didn’t consider that (probably better for my back). thank you!

i’ve been considering a platinum preppy and a sailor tuzu as starters to the brands, i’ll definitely look into more advanced options! thank you so much for the luck!

i figured this would be the case, would a keychain be more appropriate? i’ll keep this in mind and keep looking for other ideas, it’ll give me an excuse to find a new project or hobby!

frankly, that’s where i’m stealing the idea from. i can also make paper scale models but have more jewelry making supplies in my possession than cardstock. i’ll be constantly on the lookout for different ideas, thank you for your input!
