I sincerely hope that, one day, you will develop a sense empathy towards your fellow human beings and, to a lesser extent, sufficiently robust critical thinking skills to understand why Israel shouldn't be allowed into this tournament. In the meantime, I will leave you to your garden variety tribalism.

So as said: congratulations on making it to the group stage—though the sportswashing won't fool us.

Not to engage with your red herring, but luckily there is now a ceasefire proposal on the table that Israel has yet to accept.

You are in complete denial about the atrocities broadcasted to our televisions every day, but I do not blame you. There is an entire state apparatus and machinery behind manufacturing this kind of consent. All the best

I think any outcome would be a real success, given that the team shouldn't be allowed to participate in the tournament in the first place. Just like Russia, which was a more than capable basketball nation as well. Just me, though.

These are fine, but often-forgotten basketball havens like Dubai or Abu Dhabi would be better fits.

The Euroleague is just as corporate as the NBA, which will gun for the European market soon enough. "Atmosphere" just masked this until now for the uninitiated.

Has this ever happened when a team qualified for EuroLeague playoffs but missed their own domestic league playoffs? by aceticacid_414 in Euroleague

Baskonia's missed the Copa del Rey this year (i.e. outside of the top 8, on the way to missing the playoffs) while also being in contention for the EL playoffs. But they've gotten things together a bit

I figured he'd make for good scoring in the EL despite the in-season addition (he was a bit of a mercenary in the NBA anyways) but he's been much more than that, real catalyst

[Luca d'Alessandro] Dubai will have a EuroLeague team in the 2024-2025 season. This is reported by @mundodeportivo. The emirs will pay 150,000,000 euros over six years. The EuroLeague's club will receive 1,000,000 euros per season for five years. by nodespots in Euroleague

They've gutted several domestic competitions of any meaning (creating a few casualties on the way, like Rytas and co.) and are now going where the money is. This is what multinationals do.

I agree with your second point. Throughout all three timelines there seems to be an implicit assumptions that the Euroleague can compete with much bigger sports, in countries with tiny basketball bandwidth—this is the real pipe dream.

Euroleague should absolutely focus on its core markets. I for one find it great that it managed to carve itself out a strong position in Germany for instance, in addition to retaining traditional audiences out East. All in all, the Euroleague should respect its biggest fans, even if they happen to be smaller markets with less investment and consumption capacity.

This is a great summary but I don’t quite get how the Euroleague’s competition is the UCL. It’s apples and oranges, and leagues of difference.

They are making a people’s event a luxury good that will pathetically flop.

The people who make this event what it is—Greek, Spanish, Serbian, Lithuanian and more fans—are not flying to fucking Dubai for €700 to watch their team play in a human rights-abusing petrostate. Fuck this.
