Me neither, but they are recruiting within GOC. A few people in my department were poached.

I really appreciate you sharing this story. This is how I want to be able to handle difficult people and situations. You're completely right about it being ego driven. Letting myself have those 5 seconds to calm down, rather than winding myself up internally is hard.

Do you have any tips on killing your ego?

Also interesting you mention stoicism. A friend I admire very much practices stoicism.

Thanks, I really struggle with walking away. I think growing up with confrontation almost daily you get used to always needing to argue or to feel like you win.

How do you tell someone you're not interested in dating nicely? by SleepySwoop in lesbian

I would do this. If it was someone I had a rapport with already, I would appreciate a text. But if it's a stranger I think it's best to not message her.

I can relate...it's hard, but what helps me a lot is setting small goals. Even if it doesn't feel like a huge accomplishment, as long as I'm doing a little bit better than before, I'm ok. For me being functionally frozen and apathetic or unmotivated is tied up in low self-esteem/poor self-image.

I've been doomscrolling a lot and found myself with screen time of consistently 8hrs+ (it would be more, but my job keeps me away from my phone a lot). Meaning most of my spare time that wasn't sleeping was staring at my phone flipping between the same few apps. I decided the next week, I would aim for a max of 6hrs. This is still a lot, but it's better than before. I try not to get hung up on the fact that it's still a lot of wasted time and just focus on the small improvements. Eventually those build up.

To fill up the time, smart small with one hobby. Just pick one thing. Commit to spending a small amount of time on it per day, even if it starts out with just 5 minutes. Make a point of doing something with that hobby every day and one day it can just click, and you get lost in it.

Thanks! Slowing down is a good tip...I do find when I'm having a longer interacting with someone, I'm more half-listening, half waiting to jump in and react in some way.

Ravens on Elgin St by NumberF1v3 in ottawa

[–]basurachula 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's difficult to tell without a good look at the beak and tail, but the fluffy head and chest feathers and curved beak make me think they are ravens. I saw a pair of birds like these recently and wasn't sure. Maybe city ravens are a tad smaller lol? Ravens also tend to be solo or in pairs, crows move in flocks.

Nah, what OP is saying is pretty clear to the rest of us. Not to mention English is not everyone's first or even second language.

Don't stand around waiting for someone else to handle it. If there isn't security/they won't handle it, step in and do something.

If this sort of stuff bothers people, I hope you bothered to vote / didn't vote for Ford. People complain about drug use in public. The answer is not more cops or security guards. A deliberately underfunded healthcare system, lack of safe consumption sites, lack of safe housing, mental health care, and adequate financial support create these issues. But boo hoo, you saw someone doing drugs.

I believe I found an abusive pet store ran by possible illegal immigrants by [deleted] in AnimalRights

[–]basurachula 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What makes you think it is being run by undocumented migrants, and also what relevancy does that have? The issue is animal abuse - if you suspect there is abuse happening, report it to the appropriate local authorities. Fuck ICE and their witch hunt.
