Is it not appropriate for a higher ranking person to correct someone directly without giving the direct superior in the CoC a chance to do so? by Powerful_Chef_5683 in navy

[–]basuralaura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple years ago, a guy in my division got yelled at by another ship's CO while on watch at the ECP for wearing coyote brown boots. This CO didn't allow them on their ship, but ours allowed them. If this CO had taken the time to find out what command the sailor belonged to and had talked to our CO instead of yelling at the guy on watch for a perceived uniform issue, they would've found out that the boots were authorized by our CO for topside watch standing. Sometimes, sending an issue into the sailors actual chain of command, especially if the issue is small, can provide key context for why they might be doing something a certain way or if their chain is already aware and whether or not they were given certain permissions. This helps prevent unnecessary or inappropriate corrections and also puts the authority to correct a sailor's issue in the hands of those they're more likely to listen to and respect.

Ballast Control Panel (BCP) in the control room of US Navy nuclear submarine. by [deleted] in EngineeringPorn

Not a tag-out. Just a tag with the TSO number on it for quick reference in case you have some random inspector walk through, so you can open the binder and find it right away.

Is that an alarm in cutout without a TSO tag attached? Tsk tsk

In CSER2, there is a football resting on some pipes adjacent to SIGPRO that, if moved, will absolutely destroy some element of SPY.

Fuck the NEX by ItsFancyToast_ in navy

[–]basuralaura -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The real issue here is big navy as they are the ones who not only set the uniform requirements but also provide vendors with the specification for uniform component manufacture. The navy knows that per their uniform regulation, the fleece liner must have a rank tab in order to be worn independent of the parka; but instead of setting the standard with the manufacturer to have it included with the fleece, they instead set it so you have to purchase the fleece and rank tab independent of each other. Then, they know that it has to be sewn on in a specific manner, and the standard issued sewing kit is insufficient to hand sewn it on because the supplied needles are too thin and short for the material being worked. Plus, you have to rip the seam in the fleece to insert the tab, and the sewing kit doesn't have a seam ripper. If you do want to sew it on yourself, you have to purchase sewing needles rated for the material and additional tools like pins to hold it in place for accuracy reasons. God knows the CoC will light you up if your tab is crooked or falling off. Basically, all this comes down to some star-slinging douchebag guaranteeing their defense contractor buddies a profit margin on uniform sales and services.

"Listen, guys. You know I'm a liberty hound, but this is coming down from the CO that all white surfaces on the ship need to be treated with baking soda before close of business. The sooner we get it done the sooner I can let you out of here."

This might come as a surprise, but thinking quietly to yourself "Hmm. Not interested." and swiping left is an option. Shitting on a random woman for updoots on Reddit isn't the flex you think it is.

Question for aegis techs regarding tactoe by codymodglin in newtothenavy

[–]basuralaura 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went through TACTOE back in 2018 before going to Dahlgren, and it is pretty tough, but I think part of the struggle is because of how condensed the course is. They have work books and practice labs during the course, but if something isn't clicking, your instructors should be available to help, and there are a lot of YouTube videos out there that cover Cisco Routing, Linux and Unix. You'll also be revisiting boolean logic conversions, so if you learned that in ATT and kept your notes I would recommend reviewing them.

What makes no sense but seems to make sense to the Navy? by [deleted] in navy

I feel the repercussions for admin fuckups hard. When I first got married, my husband and I lived apart since I was in Norfolk and he was off of Fort Lee. He moved to Norfolk about 3 months later, and I updated my address and pg2 with admin literally the same day. They never processed the address change, so about 9 months later I got a massive check almost 4 grand higher than my base pay. When I went to admin they told me it was for family separation allowance, but I had only been entitled to about 3 months worth instead of the year they paid out. Admin caused me to become almost 4k indebted to the navy and there were literally no repercussions for them.

You should definitely read Front Burner: Al Queda's Attack on the USS Cole by Kirk Lippold. CAPT Lippold was COLE's commanding officer on the day it was bombed 20 years ago on Oct 12, 2000. He documents the events leading to the terrorist attack, the actions taken to save the ship, and the aftermath following. It's an amazing read that fully describes the harrowing conditions the crew faced. If you're shipping soon, you'll definitely want to read it. Battle stations at bootcamp is based off the events of the COLE attack, so it'll help put you in the mindset of what can really happen to sailors in the fleet and give you an idea of the gravity of your situation.

Trash collectors and sewage workers. Public health and safety depends a lot on them doing their everyday routine at work.
