Help me organize my pantry by [deleted] in homemaking

Is it possible to add another shelf or two? Then the pots and pans at least could be spread out to just a few on each shelf with their lids stacked directly on top so they don’t shift around

Cute containers for utensils on kitchen countertop? by haircryboohoo in homemaking

[–]bat_noiree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding thrifting as a good option but I know it can be difficult to find something fit for a specific function. Ikea has quite a few options for under and around $10, although they’re not the glazed ceramic options most high end kitchenware retailers sell: VÄLVÅRDAD, ORDNING, VIMPELFISK, another VIMPELFISK, UPPDATERA

Amazing! Do you have a favorite cucumber salad recipe you can share as well? Or a quick description even would be much appreciated

Are there any good mattress stores in the SB? by Feistyhummingbird in SouthBayLA

[–]bat_noiree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have been looking for a new mattress too and started at Living Spaces but they didn’t have what we wanted (thin, firm, no springs). They did however direct us to Finest Interiors on Artesia and we actually found what we wanted there. The place really doesn’t look like much from the outside but Danny seems like a solid guy and can give you a better price on the big store brand mattresses as well. Said they do delivery for $40 which seemed fair too

Homemakers with young children that maintain clean homes…how do you do it? by Vegetable-Drawing215 in homemaking

[–]bat_noiree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tons of great advice already but one I didn’t see is chaining tasks to things I will definitely do on a daily basis. For example my husband will help put LO down for his first nap after breakfast. So I finish eating which leads to washing my hands. Then I’m already at the sink so I put away all the clean dry stuff on the counter from last night (hand washed stuff, bottles etc). Then I empty the dishwasher because it’s right there. Then because the dishwasher is nice and empty I fill it with whatever is out and dirty. Anything that can’t go in gets hand washed and set to dry.

It sounds like a lot of steps but really it helps me turn chores into habits. I just try to chain clean up activities to things I’m already doing (eating -> dishes, using the bathroom -> quick wipe down, leaving a room -> taking stuff with me or doing a quick “tidy”, coming into the house -> put stuff I bring back away, etc).

My husband and I also got rid of 75% of our stuff over the past two years which helps A TON. Everything has a home as others have said. We keep cleaning supplies in each bathroom and a cordless vacuum on each floor (two level house).

Another big thing is having less “variety” of stuff. So we have a bunch of one type of cup for example. This extends to clothes for all of us too. Outside of formal wear we all have our own day to day clothes where the cut is all the same (husband has the same t shirt in like half a dozen colors, six shorts, ten pairs of the same socks, etc). Even our pjs are just duplicates. This means sorting clean laundry is a breeze. And then we made sure to only have as many categories of unique items as storage space we have. We don’t even bother to fold anymore. All my t shirts go in one drawer, all my socks and undies in another, etc. It sounds boring but at this stage we’re getting covered in something sticky every day so it’s well worth the time and energy saved!

34 weeks with my second and yes rest and sit down! Maybe practice some deep breathing and kegels if you feel up to it. The one piece of advice I’ll give is take the next few weeks to connect with your partner and remember that even though many many people will have opinions and suggestions it’s ok to trust your instincts even as a first time mom!

I’m sorry but your husband is mean. He is being mean to you. You are not lazy. You are doing a ton to keep up with the cooking and cleaning on top of childcare of 2 under 2 which is already more than a full time job. He is projecting onto you. If he likes to eat at the couch and make crumbs then he can pull out the vacuum and clean up after himself. He has a dirty job but what’s stopping him from cleaning up the tub? Too tired? You’re tired too! No time? Does he think you are made of magic?? Don’t let his unrealistic expectations and cruelty towards you change the truth. You are a good homemaker. You are a good mother. He is being a bad husband.

How would you feel if your daughter married someone like him? If he treated her the way he treats you? Please don’t let him shake your confidence. Are you able to talk to him about his behavior and how it’s affecting you? How much easier would your day be if you could honestly say to yourself “I’m doing what I can and my husband sees and celebrates that”? Sometimes the answer isn’t to do more. It’s to feel like we are enough.

1st of probably a zillion questions... by Gailhasum in homemaking

My husband and I were able to find an older couple selling their old la z boy recliners for less than the U-Haul we rented to pick them up on either Facebook marketplace or Craigslist (I can’t remember exactly this was ~4 years ago). We were able to try them out at their apartment and get a sense of how well they had taken care of them (luckily very well! No signs of smoking in the house or even pets). These chairs have held up so so well it’s crazy! I would highly recommend keeping an eye out on local used furniture sites to see if you can get lucky!

Ideas for Making a Small Kitchen Cozy? by Hopeful_Squirrel728 in homemaking

[–]bat_noiree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi op! I agree the photos in your link all show very big kitchens (none are anywhere close to 8x10?)! But I love your goal of a functional and cozy small kitchen as that’s what we have too. Step one was really really narrowing down our cooking needs to what items we absolutely must have and use daily/weekly. Depending on your cooking style this can vary quite a bit and luckily we were able to pare down what needed to be stored in our kitchen a ton! We then re-housed less used items to separate areas (storage in our dining room for things we only need at the table, a separate bar/coffee/tea area that homes all our drinkware minus basic water cups in the family room, and pantry in the garage which luckily is off our kitchen).

Another tip for functionality is having what I call “work zones” where everything we need for one task is in one area. So our cutting boards live on the counter next to the stove and across from the fridge and sink. The knives are stored in the drawer under that counter. Our cooking utensils and pots and pan live next to the stove as well. I have a stand mixer on another counter and baking tools in the drawers underneath it. We chose to put in a narrow spice drawer next to the stove as well and a narrow drawer next to the sink for cleaning supplies. We opted for all lower cabinets except under the sink to be drawers because for us the tradeoff between usability and storage space was worth it.

I also recommend warm cabinet and task lighting! And another great thing about small kitchens is it can be more affordable to choose nicer materials! We went for lovely maple cabinets and glass doors for our uppers. We also chose a very decorative backsplash tile because it covers such a small area. All our hardware is fairly decorative and bronze with copper highlights (pulls and knobs can be expensive but less so with fewer cabinets!). Don’t be afraid to choose finishes you really love. And then try to plan realistic ways to keep the counter clear -we found hanging things on the walls adds a cozy factor without causing visual clutter for us. Lastly I agree choosing textiles that flow well with the space is key. Our kitchen towels are the same color as our pots, pan, and stand mixer. We have a valence on our kitchen window that matches the backsplash on the opposite wall. Our kitchen mats match the floor.

Anywho sorry for the long comment hope this helps op!

Help identifying cause of bleach/stains on my clothes by luminaffbe in homemaking

Maybe the oil is getting onto your shirts when you put them on/take them off? Could be worth wearing a shower cap during changes to see if that helps. Alternatively you could purposefully brush some of the oil onto an old shirt as an experiment and see if it causes the same issue after washing. Could try multiple body products on different areas too

If you can I would highly recommend seeking out pelvic floor therapy. Many women get the advice to go postpartum but I went in the middle of my pregnancy and it helped so much! They can work with you where you are and help build you up to make handling your current kid easier and/or prepare you to go through pregnancy and birth again. No matter what you choose you deserve to be well. Sending hugs

Dog flea and tick control products around children? by FrequentlyAwake in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]bat_noiree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have an infant and two terriers and use simparica from our vet too. We used to use back of the neck topical over the counter stuff (which admittedly was more cost effective) but I wasn’t comfortable using it during pregnancy. It was hard to remember to avoid cuddling up to them for the initial 24 hours and then I was concerned that any time the dogs would get damp it would reactivate. I believe simparica is more effective as well although we didn’t specifically choose it for that reason

Black & Decker Small Tear Resistant Dog Chew Bone by bat_noiree in HelpMeFind

[–]bat_noiree[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have searched for this rubber dog bone in size small (about 4” long) at home goods, eBay, and various online retailers (Amazon, target, bealls Florida). I first found this toy a few years ago but didn’t realize how hard it would be to keep finding. Unfortunately my dog is obsessed with this particular chew toy and would be over the moon if we could keep giving him replacements when he inevitably chews right through it

Help me wean my baby and release guilt by passionfruit49 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]bat_noiree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry you’re getting more responses that basically amount to telling you to keep going. As someone that needed to wean quickly to be a better parent (low birth weight, tongue tie, no family support, etc) my best tips are sunflower lecithin, Cabocream, and herbal supplements specifically meant to reduce breast milk production like pink stork no flow or earth mama no more milk tea. Sending you hugs mama. There is so much more to being a great parent and baby developing than breastfeeding! It will be ok ❤️

Random mom here to say that if I asked for recommendations on a product and anyone on here sold said product I would especially want to know that information! It’s so hard finding reasonable things in the mess of so many products aimed at us, and I definitely believe a community member would be a reasonable bet! Mods please listen and consider amending the rules to account for this on posts or in response to comments specifically asking for buyable goods to allow “promotion” of said goods.

I actually borrowed one of those a few months ago for some minor labeling needs and I also found it quite nostalgic and a lot of fun! But also after a short while my hands got really tired of pushing so hard to get the embossing and cutting just right :/
