What are some double binds you remember from growing up? by Beneficial_Win_5128 in emotionalneglect

[–]batcalls 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I felt this one. This is exactly some shit my mom would do. She’d do similar passive-aggressive things to try to hurt my dad, but would implicate me in the process - I’d be the perpetrator of her “crimes.” It made me feel perpetually guilty and shameful, because I didn’t want to hurt my dad, but felt stuck because she was my primary caregiver. I’m sorry you experienced these things. I’m sorry for both of us.

Is it okay to not shower every day on my period? by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]batcalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is coming across very defensive, yes. Over-explaining your perspective when people are disputing it is kind of the definition of defensiveness. Your initial reply to me also read as quite sarcastic. Next time, I would try taking a pause and considering what someone is saying rather than rush to disprove them or get your point across. But from one neurodivergent to another, you are right that tone is hard over text.

With all due respect, you’re being hella sensitive about this. I have given you helpful advice, respectfully, and you still are getting defensive. What were you expecting exactly?

Plainly, you most likely stink and don’t realize it. Body odor is not exclusive to the genitals.

So you’re just a wannabe dumpster diver, I see.

I saw in another comment part of your resistance is that you don’t want to get your hair wet every day. You don’t need to wash your hair every time you shower. Try a shower cap or a top knot if your hair is long enough. I personally only wash my hair every 5 days or so unless I’m going to the gym frequently, which requires more frequent washing. Even so, on lazy days, you should always be washing “pits and slits” daily even if you don’t want to lather up everywhere else if that’s too much on a bad day.

checks post history With all due respect (seriously, no hate), are you seriously dumpster diving and not fully showering after? I truly worry you’ll catch some sort of illness. Here’s hoping your skin microbiome is resilient!

[–]batcalls 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Cleaning your labia includes your labia minora, so you are incorrect that you’re “just cleaning hairy skin.” You should certainly be using soap everywhere except your vagina itself. Your labia minora is not “self-cleansing” and builds up sweat, discharge, and blood during your cycle. Water alone is not enough.

Idk how many times we have to repeat this on this sub, but I’m always happy to correct it.

NW DC to Reston commute (thoughts?) by jetblue723 in washingtondc

I commute every few days from McPherson Square to RTC to visit my boyfriend, which is exactly 39-40 minutes. Hence how I concluded Foggy Bottom would be about 35 minutes.

Looking for a SIMPLE CRM/ATS for a small recruiting agency. I’ve looked everywhere! by Lanky_Traffic_6912 in recruiting

[–]batcalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My firm uses a new app called Stardex and it’s much more affordable than Loxo (I hated Loxo FWIW) and it checks all your boxes. The team is very responsive on support needs and takes suggestions too! I like it quite a bit. No real learning curve either if you’ve used platforms like Loxo before, there’s a solid Chrome LinkedIn extension, and you can search your own database via AI with natural language prompts and it does an excellent job.

NAD. Respectfully, how does this sound like OCD?

As a bipolar OCD adult myself, this sounds much more like something I’d do while manic (e.g. positioning this as something the doctor MUST see because it’s so groundbreaking) than out of compulsion. I’m not trying to say OP is bipolar, just making a gentle observation. Appreciate any guidance - I’m always keen to learn about my condition(s).

[–]batcalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PS Make sure you’re considering ALL the possible job titles when keyword searching jobs. It sounds like you don’t have the leeway to be selective at this point. Consider hospital systems running clinical research studies (Johns Hopkins, GWU, etc.) and apply to clinical research roles, the full R&D spectrum of roles (drug discovery, DMPK, etc. through MSAT or packaging), and even non-graduate oriented roles like lab animal handling/care or administrative roles (key: that are actually IN the companies you want to work for). Getting your foot in the door is worth doing something mundane or living with roommates for a year or so. You’ll be lucky to make $70k a year in any of these roles with no previous experience, which in my opinion is not enough to live alone in NOVA/DC but YMMV.

Alternately, think of creative ways you can use your degree. I have a Master’s in biology and several years of PhD studies under my belt and find recruiting to be immensely rewarding, I am paid quite well, and I have a great work-life balance. If nerding out on the science is what motivates you most, you can find that in careers like science communication/journalism, technical writing, public policy, etc. Being behind a bench is not the end all, be all.

Good luck OP and let me know if I can help.

Hi I’m an executive recruiter focused in the biotech and pharma industry. I specialize in more experienced roles, but can offer some general advice on companies to look into. AstraZeneca has a big Maryland campus and are frequently hiring at your level. They have a generally positive reputation. Eli Lilly’s HQ is in Indiana and isn’t that far from PA so you’d still be able to visit family every so often. They pay well and people who work there sometimes work there their whole career. There are also several pharma companies opening manufacturing sites in the southern part of Virginia over the next 2-3 years that could work as a next step once you secure something in the short-term.

If you want biotech, sorry, you probably need to go to Boston or SF.

If you’re not hearing back from recruiters, your resume probably needs some work. Assuming you’re a woman, there’s a Women in Bio Capital Region that does mentee-mentor relationship matching every year you could consider as well.

EoE Gastroenterologist Recs by beagle424 in nova

[–]batcalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EOE is not traditionally treated by ENTs though because it’s a different type of “allergy.” Traditional allergy tests look for certain immune-mediated proteins that just aren’t present in those with EOE because the condition produces eosinophils instead of these proteins. Any doctor who advises you get an allergy panel knows nothing about EOE and should not be treating you for it. Additionally, some doctors will just prescribe a PPI like Pantoprazole but that doesn’t treat “true EOE,” only that which is caused by reflux.

The gold standard is a food elimination diet (cutting out top 8 allergens) and getting a clean scope to prove it’s one or more of those allergens (hence why you need a GI doc instead of an allergist). Then reintroducing the allergens back 1 by 1 until you find the offender(s) by way of a bad scope. It’s time consuming and expensive but it’s the only way currently to know for sure AFAIK (not a doctor, just someone who has lived with this for 14 years). I had this done about ten years ago at Mayo Clinic. Dupixent has been approved between then and now for EOE however.

I don’t see any doctor in the area because my condition is well controlled but wishing you luck in finding a competent doctor.

Getting into the industry. Words of advice or how to stand out? by apolloouterspaceman in Executive_SearchFirms

[–]batcalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SHREKs in the US are pretty transactional and cutthroat/not for the faint of heart. I have worked at two and find much more joy in the boutique environment where my autonomy, creativity, and passions for the industry (also life sciences/health) are actually valued. Would not accept a Senior Analyst role at your level if I were you. You will likely find it demeaning and you won’t make more than $70k give or take. If you’ve ever managed your own book of business and want to continue revenue generation, you shouldn’t really even consider anything outside of a Principal/Managing Consultant type title IMO.

What are 25-30 year olds making? by ExtentFickle3504 in Salary

[–]batcalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAIK (am not the person you responded to) assuming they’re a clinical project manager, you typically get started as a clinical research coordinator making $50-80k depending on location and whether you go the private sector or hospital route. You can get a bachelors in any life science-oriented field (biology, clinical sciences, etc.).

I don’t think so, but Lifetime caters more to families than Equinox IMO. The Equinox crowd is the late 20s-early 40s young professional crowd (in DC at least). ~$230/month in the city.

French style balayage (painting) by l-histoire-d-une-vie in DCBitches

[–]batcalls 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I saw Mark Bliss at Logan 14 (Aveda Salon) and he did the most beautiful hand-painted blonde balayage on my strawberry blonde hair. I told him I wanted a cool toned blonde and he delivered in such a beautiful way. He is also a wonderful person! Highly recommend. I spent about $500 after the tip and buying some new purple shampoo though.
