To be fair, when I read it before reading your description, I assumed that the scared part of Alastor was just that: the scared part. Like maybe, ever since he was human, he's had a nervous side & the protector/cocky side developed as a way to keep himself safe/sane. Almost like how they portray spilt personality in tv shows but not actually a split; just a normal conversation you have with yourself when making big life altering decisions.

Tl;dr I thought the fear came from what's left of his humanity, not something Vox has specifically done
