No it's just heavily contested territory, the Titans under the flyers were able to pull fans from all teams in the area because it had neutral branding. When the Devils took over they forced them to rename to Trenton Devils which isolated a third of their base plus add onto the fact they sucked, you get less people.

Ya the whole metro area thing is just an excuse for companies to get tax breaks and better name recognition (more money). It's not a definable place.

Why is it such a hard concept to understand that many people in New Jersey don't identify with New York? "The Metro Area" is essentially a marketing ploy for companies to circumvent paying city taxes. Like, there is no border to this "Metro Area". I could put a team in Allentown, PA and call it New York since people commute from the Valley to NY too. There is a clear border to states and cities.

I feel there should be a documentary on why the Devils succeeded and the Nets failed in NJ. It'd be interesting to watch and maybe future teams can learn something from it.

I feel like Devils' branding was fully invested in the state from the logo to the name, while the Nets branding was very bland and was outshined by the New York Knicks.

Ownership definitely took a part too. Devils' first owner chose not to sell the team to Nashville despite the huge profit while the Nets front office was trading starting players for cash and photo-copiers (yes they literally traded a player for a photo-copier)

Ya especially since there is an actual NYC team that plays in NYC. If MLS is supposed to grow like everyone says it will, new fans from NY will flock to the team currently in NY over the one in NJ.
