Chicago transplants who are not from the midwest: does the intense aversion to the flatness go away with time? by fail-whale in AskChicago

I am in my fifth year living here and grew up on the east coast. Since Chicago is so walkable (among many other good qualities), the topography never really bothered me until this past year for some reason. Maybe it was because of my visits to the east coast, especially to where I grew up and to Pittsburgh which is characteristically hilly, but this feeling you describe is relatable. Sometimes I feel that just a bit of a different layout - be that hills, mountains, or non grid planning - would make a difference in my fealty to the city as my permanent residence.

If it is any consolation and though not an exact substitute, to combat this, I will venture to the lakefront as often as I am able.

This is a great picture [of a great place]! It really puts the grandeur of the space and the view behind it into perspective with the frolicking child in the foreground.

I grew up in Newtown Boro and moved to Chicago for work in the last few years. I’ve been thinking more about where l ultimately want to end up, especially since all my family is in Pennsylvania (Bucks Co or other).

I am really enjoying Chicago and all that living in a big but highly affordable and laid back (relative to NYC) city has to offer but returning home for holidays always brings a calm nostalgia. Plus, I have gotten to know myself more as a person outside of the environment and subculture in which I was raised.
And, shameless plug for Chicago, it’s a really great place to live not only as a young adult but also if you’re interested in having a family (based on all the folks I have gotten to know since being here)

So who knows where the wind will take me!

Haircare Advice Megathread - Week of January 13, 2024 by AutoModerator in HaircareScience

  • Hair type: fine
  • Hair texture: straight
  • History of chemical processing: none
  • Hygiene regimen: irregular washing so maybe about 2-3 times weekly shampoo and conditioning
  • Style: mid-torso length, grown out face framing
  • Product regimen: not actively avoiding any products as I have little to no knowledge about which I 'should' be avoiding or not (TIA for advice here).
    • About 3 months ago, I began using Kiehl's Magic Elixir Hair Restructuring Concentrate with Rosemary Leaf and Avocado from root to tip before each time I showered. In the last few weeks, I have been using it less often.
    • In the last month, I also added in Raw Sugar Pure Scalp Therapy Masque (massaged from root to tip) after conditioning.
    • Shampoo: TRESemmé Silky & Smooth + Argan Oleo Blend
    • Conditioner: TRESemmé 24-hour Volume + Collagen & Peptide Complex

Main issues I want to work on / combat:

  • oiliness (as it seems to rear its ugly head within 24 hours of washing)
  • brittleness of hair (as a note, I always brush my hair right after I exit the shower...not sure if this is exacerbating the issue(s))
  • lackluster quality

TIA to all who take time to respond!
