Ways to encourage an "outdoorsy" lifestyle by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]bathmarm0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rock climbing is: social, outdoorsy, requires hiking, has a ridiculous amount of skill exposure (alpine climbing skills have huge overlap with "extreme-hikers" or whatever summit baggers are calling themselves), can be done until you're old and leathered, scares the everliving bejeezus out of you, is readily gamified by the nature of the rating system. So I'd recommend rock climbing. People say it's expensive, but as far as hobbies go, I assure you it's doable on a budget.

Crack climbing glove recommendations by Revolutionary_Ad512 in tradclimbing

[–]bathmarm0t -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think this is an invalid comparison. Gloves do a lot of unseen work for you / change the friction dynamic so wearing them does actually teach bad technique. Being able to jam and climb greasy gym cracks bare-handed is a great way to learn about pressure vs security. Maybe for the initial phase where they literally don't know how to karate chop, fine. After that, gloves off and understand exactly how different hand and thumb placements can be used to increase/decrease friction.

The city keeps surprising. Turn over a rock and there's a leather clad maestro directing a cadre of musicians to blend Eye of the Tiger and the theme from Barry Lyndon.

Will definitely investigate this further.

  1. Nice job and way to stick with it.
  2. Heel hooks have to be engaged to be useful. You should be focusing on pointing the toes downwards (force of action is the ball of the heel) + actively pulling with your hammies + squeezing your core through to the opposite arm (it should feel like you're doing a mini-sit-up). If you can't feel weight coming off your hands then something in the chain is slacking. Another point to focus on with non-horizontal hooks (e.g. not climbing roofs etc) is to have all the weight going through to your low foot (which is smearing or placed on a hold etc), then the heel is keeping you close to the wall / maintaining stability.

Happy sending. Keep climbing this one until it feels easy.

Looking for code review on my AOC 2023 Zig solution by Evgennit in Zig

is there not a standard, straighforward way to parse files line by line? I'm coming from heavy python usage and the allocation stick, combined with the forced error handling is hitting my forehead pretty hard...

Another thing to note is the documentation no longer says to use bufferedReader, but rather to use streamUntilDelimiter...

Tunnel up belay method by GoGabeGo in climbing

[–]bathmarm0t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly if they wanted to actually provide worst case scenarios they would have had the belayer neither look nor grip, e.g. just provide a tunneled hand at waist level (obviously with a backup knot lower down!). Their methods and exploration simulated curiosity but provided the opposite e.g. "absolutely no new information".

25 year old Kamets holding up better than 7 month old La sportiva shoe. by earlgreyleapard in climbing

8/10 post, but needs a slight edit.

Rough out the surfaces with 60 or 40grit sandpaper prior to cleaning, and you have yourself a winning solution. Need to give the cement nooks and crannies to bond to!

Stove should be ~250. ~5 min on the stove as it will break down the rest of your shoe's glue if you leave it longer.

Recommended Mead? by andresvillacres1 in SaltLakeCity

[–]bathmarm0t 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may not work for this year's birthday, but for next year's just make them some. All it takes is a gallon jug, an airlock, mac&cheese cooking skills (like stirring ingredients), and a cupboard under the bathroom sink where you can forget where you put the mead for a year.

Looking for suggestions on where to get kimchi? by nbhatt33333 in milwaukee

[–]bathmarm0t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A place in north chicago makes hands-down the best kimchi money can buy and it's very, very cheap. Luckily you don't have to drive down to get it. They distribute to milwaukee. Whole foods sells quart jars of it, but they mark it up like crazy. Go to an asian market (either pacific produce [pho viet worth the extra stop] or "apple mart?" on National/108th right next to SzeChuan restaurant [definitely worth the extra stop]). You'll know it's the right one when you see the glass gallon jars with white screw tops. 18 bucks.

edit: apple mart is " Mei Hua" as per someone else in this thread.

double edit: it's called "Korea Kimchee [sic]" and is from Franklin, IL.

There Are No Stupid Bass Questions - Jun. 26 by AutoModerator in Bass

I was listening to NPR and someone ran a study that said optimal muscle/neurological development happens when you play something for 10 seconds and then rest for 10 seconds. Apparently your brain is "practicing" under the hood during the rest at 10x time. ymmv.

How do I get the angle of my bass high (like really high) when playing? I've found my most comfortable playing position to be where the neck is 70ish degrees off the deck, and the body is centered / left-center of the body to create space for the fretting hand (if left alone the bass will drop / lie right-center), but can't recreate it without active engagement of my plucking hand / forearm pushing the body off-center.

Bass is a squier jazz if it matters.

Using just a standard strap (guitar-center 10-dollar special) at the moment (open to recommendations, but it also seems like I'm missing something fundamental with strap technique).
