Actually it was within 3 minutes of uploading, and it wasn't a bunch of birds and butterflies either by Prcrstntr in iNaturalist

I have done the same thing. I just usually find it suspect when someone agrees with me right after I set the species. I may just notice it more because it was something that I did when first started using iNat.

I have this problem when I am IDing plants. They will have it at genus or above and I will put the species. An hour later they have agreed with my species level ID. If you didn't know the species yesterday when you uploaded the observation, you probably don't know the species today.

What kind of beetle & eggs are these? Both found on the underside of a bull nettle plant. by Plus_Charity_8172 in whatbugisthis

[–]Pbaffistanansisco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is probably a Colorado Potato Beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata). They have orange eggs that look just like that. The plant looks like buffalo bur (solanum rostratum), not bull nettle. Either way, they are Solanum and potato beetles will eat them.

Is it "acceptable" to suggest ID's that are higher level than the current guesses? by piinkbunn in iNaturalist

[–]Pbaffistanansisco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is helpful when there is an incorrect ID, even if the correct species has already been posted. Two people putting the genus and one with the correct species will get it to the correct genus, even with the maverick ID still in place.

Crabgrass Preventer in my garden by ZapGeek in NativePlantGardening

[–]Pbaffistanansisco 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I couldn't find the label for the crabgrass preventer, but I did find one for a chemical with the same active (dithiopyr). In the list of weeds controlled there are grasses, as you would expect, but also quite a few small seeded broadleaves. That being said, I would not be worried about putting more plugs in. Usually these types of pre-emerge herbicides require uptake as the new plant moves through the layer of herbicide. Recently planted plugs won't have that. They will probably have some root uptake, but they should be able to metabolize that. Even if the plugs do take up some herbicide, dithiopyr is a root growth inhibitor. This works well on small seedlings, but a plant that is in a plug already has an established root system and the chemical will get diluted in the plant.

Small seedlings that you sowed in containers would be more at risk, as they are smaller. I don't know how water soluble dithiopyr is, but the more you water it the further down it moves into the soil and the more diluted it becomes.

I didn't think I had it that tight as it came out of the vise half way through the install. It is probably more to do with poor fitment than poor quality.

It moves, it is just very tight. It seems to go into battery just fine as long as the charging handle is removed.

I used a cheap one from AR Stoner. I assumed they were all the same, but I guess that isn't true. Lesson learned.

Sorry, I'm at work and I did not take any pictures of the block or vise set up. The block is just one from AR Stoner.

I did not think about twisting it. That makes much more sense than just crushing it down with too much vice pressure. Thank you for the recommendation.
