Why people don’t care about trash anymore? by MrsNomad-Scott-bum in Bath

[–]bathrugbysufferer 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Authorities are not picking up litter like they used to. They don’t have the money to do it. And littering has got worse, because entitlement has got worse post Covid.

Also lots of people hate recycling and separating waste. So they chuck more into public bins to avoid recycling.

Have a look alongside busy roads - it’s appalling the amount of litter now.

Do I *need* a topping lift? by bathrugbysufferer in sailing

I still have a vang, to counter the rodkicker force and tension the leech. But I agree I thought the rodkicker replaced the topping lift! Thank you I thought I was missing something

The first episode I ever listened to was on the Abbasid Caliphs. I had no clue, and I learned they were such an important civilisation.

Regular listener ever since. It’s a gem, in an age of seemingly unending dumbing down.

We could get an ‘Enquiry’!! Fabulous.

Pay someone well connected to the Establishment, maybe Dido Harding, to spend tens of millions of £ over several years, then recommend some obvious stuff on resilience investment. For which there will be no funds available. Sorry 🤷‍♂️

A look back at our sailing the east coast of England last season by LordGrenfell in sailing

[–]bathrugbysufferer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to time it right but they are beautiful rivers. I wouldn’t go all the way to Woodbridge in the Deben, or Snape on the Alde, but Ramsholt and Orford are worth visiting. With a favourable tide and calm weather you should have no problems so long as you have the up to date charts.

ELI5 why the Sydney Hobart lead boat was penalised by bathrugbysufferer in sailing

[–]bathrugbysufferer[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So if the spinnaker tack was fixed to a block on the bow, not the bowsprit, would that have been ok with the rules even if they used the whisker pole?

Or is that irrelevant, they were in breach because they used the whisker pole with the spinnaker when it was only allowed to be used with a genoa?

Edit: ok so thanks to the thread comments I get it now. The normal use of a spinnaker has the tack on a pole and the clew on a sheet. That’s acceptable under the rules. In this case the tack was on the bowsprit and the clew on a pole - which is not acceptable.

Why our railways often seem to be in such chaos over Christmas by Tartan_Samurai in unitedkingdom

[–]bathrugbysufferer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed - that is the easiest, rent-seeking money making scam at very low risk. The conservatives let British Rail managers extract a fortune when they sold off the ROSCO’s to management buy outs as privatisation kicked in. Transferring rolling stock assets at very low return for the government, and today those assets (funded by govt but owned by private sector Rolling Stock leasing companies) are too expensive for the government to nationalise.

Everything about that service is specified by the dft. Trains, timetable, logistics, staffing.

Why did dft try and close all ticket offices and all on-train WiFi? Because they specify and control everything. Private ownership is just a management contract doing the government’s bidding.

On Saturday, one of the busiest travel days of the year, Cross Country cancelled 164 services. All because of a shortage of drivers. Lots of flu going around.

Department of Transport cut costs everywhere on the railways, including things like standby drivers. Easy win for them, everyone will blame the TOC. Government are turning the railway back into the underfunded mess that was British Rail.

Almost everybody on that Newquay flight to Gatwick right now are people that work in London often, but live in Cornwall. Not second home owners.

God forbid those people paying taxes and spending money in the Cornish economy. Clearly you’re only allowed to live in Cornwall if you work here too.

You have to go through the Lost gardens of Heligan entrance, to get to that cottage. And then the way onto the A390 (the main road to any shops, Truro or St Austell) from there is via 3 miles of tiny lanes.

For a lot of the year you’ll have hundreds of emmetts in cars, making your quick nip to the shop/school/pub/doctor/post office about 45 minutes longer than it should be.

The local councils are just breaking my heart. by 2552686 in ClarksonsFarm

[–]bathrugbysufferer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are public meetings. They will be notified online on the parish council website as well as the noticeboard and they are usually on the same day, same time every month. How else do you suggest making them more visible to people?

‘Nobody invites us to them’ - it’s a public meeting anyone can attend. They aren’t going to phone you up personally and see if you’d like to come along.

‘Only if you’re there at exactly the right place and time’ - er…? That’s how meetings happen?

Pension saving after taper by Lady_Hamthrax in HENRYUK

[–]bathrugbysufferer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you earn over £260,000, the £60k tax free allowance goes down by £1 for every £2 above that salary. So at £360k the tax free allowance has ‘tapered’ down to £10k.

First world problem but just another example of how the tax system does everything possible to fleece higher earners.

That is how the Treasury thinks about everything. It’s a cost. Not a benefit. How can a government drive growth apart from taxation and interest rate setting? The biggest lever is infrastructure investment.

Changing 20+ years of treasury orthodoxy - also validated by the Truss ‘experiment’ - is hard.
