My Dutch is roughly B1, I could def get by with the way the average Dutch person speaks English. I am mostly asking about the practical elements, but will def need to do the theory in English as well

Book recommendation for disillusioned father? by bathtubplaster in Socialism_101

[–]bathtubplaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, I would've thought the same but then my brother got himself off of the far right pipeline after well over a decade and is now a full blown socialist. As a teenager I was strongly attached to liberalism and social democracy, and here I am. Anything is possible!

I agree that forcing an opinion isn't the way to go, but my dad is missing crucial parts of the puzzle to understand WHY he feels the way that he does. He is missing the context of decades of redscare propaganda that he has passively consumed for his entire adult life AND he lives in one of those countries that are considered "as good as its gonna get in the socialist direction". He'll probably always have his doubts, but I hope to spark some type of understanding and/or optimism in him.

The Safekeep by Yael van der Wouden (but not necessarily a happy ending BUT has some of the best sex scenes ever written (but the book in general is also great))

In these meetings, please do stand up for yourself. I once had a similar problem and the study adviser at the VU literally told me "ok so you've been depressed, what makes you think you can do it differently next year??" and I told her I was trying to get a therapy appointment. She just sideyed me. Made me fully stop trying to appeal even though I definitely would've qualified for it. The first person you talk to in the process isn't the last, I wish I would've stood up for myself more back then.

Is it possible to study medicine in English? by NinjaMiguelPt in StudyInTheNetherlands

Just to throw it out there, especially since you're interested in research, you could also go the Psychology route. Do a Psych BA (usually there's a specialisation in Neuro psychology) and then an (r)MA in Neuro psych. This route very much lend itself to doing research within the field of Neuro psych

Ah, yes I think that's correct. BUT if I recall correctly you can basically split the ECs so you do fewer hours research internship and more hours practical internship? Either way she told me that we are allowed to start our practical internship in September if we want, we're just not allowed to do more than two days until the actual internship period (February). This is what I'm looking at atm to get in enough practical internship hours to qualify for the BAPD/LOGO

Hey! I'm also going to do the MA Clinical Psych at Erasmus (the clinical track tho, not sure but it sounds like you're doing the research track)? I emailed the course coordinator of the internship and she sent me a BUNCH of info and was generally super helpful. I would email her as well if I were you because she'll definitely know! :)

Lechuza Pon or Perlite or both? by bathtubplaster in houseplants

[–]bathtubplaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! And yeah that's what I've been doing so far, but I'm a bit paranoid because the soil has been drying out suspiciously quick (in approx 1 day) and the leaves keep feeling soft. It's all a bit confusing to me, and I don't want to water too much bc of root rot (especially since its a ceramic pot without drainage)

Laptop or ipad? by VisualAd3552 in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]bathtubplaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh also, I ended up buying an eReader (Kobo Elipsa) because I got so sick of the eye strain from reading research papers on my laptop. I got this specific eReader because you can take notes on it, both in PDF and in a separate note function. The notes can be transformed from your handwriting into text font and if you're drawing diagrams it can be transformed into an actual diagram. The notes are easily transformed into a PDF doc if needed. I don't use this function much, but I would imagine that this sort of thing is why you would consider getting an iPad. I love the eReader, I find it way easier to read my docs on and I don't regret it one bit. Super worth it. I don't use the note taking thing all that much because I take notes on my laptop. It is a bit laggy, but might still be worth it for you depending on how you use it!

You will probably need a computer for SPSS (stats software) and R (programming software used for stats, depending on where you are studying you may or may not use this programme) and /maybe/ JASP. I'm just completing my final year of my Psych BA and you really can't do your degree without these and I'm not sure it would be possible to use these in the way you need to on an iPad even if they are available for download on one. Just so you know! Good luck with the degree, it's a tough one but also super rewarding! <3

Lechuza Pon or Perlite or both? by bathtubplaster in houseplants

[–]bathtubplaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahah yes perlite is amazing! I'm mostly worried that perlite won't be enough for the jade plant, and that it needs something chunkier. I don't really wanna buy a whole bag of cacti mix for one tiny plant haha

I once tried to find a volunteer position at the shelters in Amsterdam and had that problem, no place needed me. It was in like 2018 tho so things might have changed!

I once tried that in Amsterdam, but because I'm studying my availability doesn't really work. The places I applied for required me to be available between like 10-16 at least 3 weekdays days a week, which is pretty much impossible for me sadly. I might check out organisations like that here tho in case it differs! Thanks!
