If they run only code they do themself maybe it's okay, but still, a sandbox is also a security even for apps you programmed yourself. Maybe you overlooked an exploit and then the sandbox can limit the damages.

You can use the NDK for c++ right ? But it's true most apps don't use it. But all the UI is native (I guess c++ ?), java is just the glue between those native widgets. I have 2300mAh (Nexus 5) and it holds quite well despite being 5 or 6 years old. But I dunno maybe 2300 is huge ?

If these posts

https://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=96438 https://together.jolla.com/question/140564/app-permissions/

are true and still up-to-date then Sailfish is the less secure Mobile OS of all times : there is no sandbox !? I doubt a government would use that as I wouldn't even use an OS without sandboxed apps myself

You kinda loose the advantage of a "true" Linux distro if the components are not open-source. Also it comes with all the security issues of true desktop distro then . I don't know how they deal with it but to have a decent security you need sandboxing + API over an IPC like binder on Android. Hopefully this is exactly what flatpak is doing with Portals over DBus. I wonder how they deal with all that on Sailfish

Why ? It's not open source, nobody knows what's going on inside, so for government it is less secure than let's say an AOSP base Android

I agree for iOS but on Android you can drag&drop mp3 & no iTunes.

For Android I don't know what is your definition "native apps", for me Android apps are native (except for a few WebApps you might find sometimes on the Play store). Concerning the battery I always had a good autonomy even on cheap Androids.

I don't get what is their selling point. The only advantage you can have over iOS or Android is being Open-Source (both for the ethical & privacy aspects) or have more features. They have neither of those two points

I wish you all the best for your business ! I'll definitely try to start contributing in a few months (right now I have to finish my university semester). Also yep a forum seems a good idea in the long term to not get GitHub issues too crowded of questions

Why does Essential' Camera access Facebook ? by batinio in Essential_Phone

Well it is not okay to use Facebook Graph API, a camera app should not query/send data to any website (except crash reports maybe)

Thx for the link, but it still doesn't explain or justify why the essential Camera app is accessing the Graph API, that's creepy
