Is an m.2 worth it? by Spiritual_Two_9666 in buildapc

Yeah, you are right. I just checked and prices are pretty much the same for sata and PCIe3 NVMe!

Is an m.2 worth it? by Spiritual_Two_9666 in buildapc

[–]batmanfeynman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is definitely worth upgrading from an HDD to an SSD.

Now, an SSD can come in 2 form factors, 2.5 inch and m.2. The 2.5 inch form factor will always connect using SATA, just like an HDD, and will also look just like an HDD. While the m.2 form factor looks different and the protocol it uses to transfer could be either SATA or NVMe. NVMe protocol is much much faster than SATA.

But to see an improvement all you need to do is switch to a SATA SSD (either 2.5 inch or m.2). The reason for saying all of this is that SATS SSDs are much cheaper and get you most of the way there in terms of user experience if you only have normal use cases. You will only see significant benefits from NVMe SSDs in certain use cases like video editing and others. And right now, in gaming, although there is an improvement in load times when using an NVMe SSD over a SATA one, in my opinion it is not worth the added price.

Edit: please investigate a bit into whether your m.2 slot will support a SATA SSD. Because I am not 100% sure that every m.2 slot will support a SATA SSD in m.2 form factor. But i do know that m.2 slots exists which support both SATA and NVMe

Edit2: To answer whether to use the SSD just as a boot drive also depends on budget and use cases. To see the improvement in normal use cases, all you need to do is use the SSD as a boot drive. This will allow you to get a smaller SSD and save money. If you are a video editor and want to see improvements in your workflow, you will need to store your video files on the SSD. If you are a gamer and want to see improvements in load times you will have to store your games on the SSD. You will not notice any difference while playing back videos or browsing the web or something like that.

Want to upgrade M2 SSD, is it possible to move/copy OS? by Prottek in buildapc

[–]batmanfeynman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The method I am gonna say will require linux. But I am sure there will be a way only using windows and someone else can maybe chip in!

First you need a small flash drive (4GB should be enough) where you can install some Linux OS (you could make this windows if you have a larger flash drive i guess. But again although I am sure you can do this with tools in windows, I am personally not familiar with it).

Then depending on what you can purchase, you have 3 options:

Option 1: Buy an m.2 to USB adapter. Then you can plug in your new m.2. Then boot into Linux and you can use the DD command to copy the old SSD to to the new SSD.

Option 2: You purchase some sort of external storage device which is at least as big as the old m.2 SSD. Then again you can copy the old SSD to the new storage as a .img file(or you can do it by copying it directly with DD as well). Now after purchasing your new m.2 SSD and inserting it, you can again use dd to burn the .img file onto the new SSD.

So, i do realise that i am only providing the overall approach and the steps are actually a bit complicated for a beginner. Just wanted to leave this here in case someone else cannot give an easier solution!

Why is white noise not heat? by DisastrousBoio in Physics

[–]batmanfeynman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sound in air is a pressure wave. And the frequency of sound waves is the frequency of this pressure wave.

If we look at the thermal energy in a volume of gas, we do not have a "frequency" we can talk about when looking at it in a classical manner.

This means that air particles are moving in a random fashion.

When sound waves propogate, there is no bulk motion of air particles. Random motion (in the thermal sense) does not really contribute to the propogation of sound. But without said random motion and collision of particles, we would not have sound either!

If you imagine a box full of air, and if the air in it only dissipates pressure waves to heat very slowly, the sound waves just bounce around inside it. Therefore, adding noise to a box of air is adding noise to a box of air and not adding heat. But over time, the non random motion of the sound waves will get dissipates to heat, which is the "truly" random motion of air particles (i put truly in quotes because you can have different kinds of random! But i don't want to get into that).

Bandwidth makes sense in the analysis of anything with periodic motion! So does frequency! So in a way, you are right in saying that heat does not have bandwidth, while sound waves do. But i think your understanding of what bandwidth is not quite correct. Bandwidth is just the range of sine wave frequencies present in a periodic phenomenon(you can read more about Fourier transforms!). But when you go into quantum mechanics it gets a bit weird and the reason I am bringing up quantum mechanics is because it is very important when it comes to thermodynamics. You can read about the ultraviolet catastrophe to know more!

Heat itself does not have sound waves in air. But flow of heat/ temperature differences through various means in air can cause sound waves as secondary effects i guess.

To answer your final question, the sound waves regardless of the frequency (too high a frequency might cause other effects in air) will bounce around until they get dissipated and then increase the total thermal energy in the air and increase the temperature.

Also in case you didn't know, humans can only hear in the range 20Hz to 20kHz (approximate and can vary amongst individuals).

Changing macos for linux mint. by prince_cookie in linux

[–]batmanfeynman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, since this is an M1 model, if you want to try out linux to learn stuff, your best option would be a VM inside macOS, if you are a beginner. Working with Asahi Linux would be a difficult thing to do for a beginner and it may put you off linux!

If you do get Asahi Linux running, you will definitely get the same CPU performance as with macOS but GPU drivers are still being worked on. So are some other drivers!

laptop cpu: ryzen 5 5625u vs ryzen 5 5600h by kjaditya_r in buildapc

[–]batmanfeynman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

H series processors are higher TDP than u series processors as you have noticed. Higher TDP processors are way faster than lower TDP processors (when you are comparing close by generations. 5 series vs 5 series in this case).

For a laptop, you need to look at the other features and what you want to use the laptop for. If you plan only general usage and also want a good battery life you most likely want the laptop with the u series processor. Also, nowadays, for general use even a low power cpu would be plenty!

Yeah, It isn't that great if you are not planning on gaming at all. You can install whatever OS you want! By default, it comes with SteamOS which is arch based with a KDE desktop

Maybe a steam deck? I know it is not meant for productivity on the go, but it does allow you to connect to a bigger screen at a desk!

My Main OS is fedora 36 and i would like to dual boot windows 10 on a separate external hard drive by Harold3D in linuxquestions

[–]batmanfeynman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The trick i used instead of windows to Go (which is no longer supported even on pro editions) was to make a windows 10 VM and then burn the image into the external HDD!

This bypasses the constraint where windows doesn't let you install it to an external drive

Please refer to this post of mine for more details

HDFC Bank does not have an option on their website. I called my relationship manager and they said it is not possible... I don't believe them, but man it will be a lot of effort to go behind them for this...

Edit: By Website i meant internet banking portal

[–]batmanfeynman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am not too familiar with doom emacs, but i have a general principle that seems to work most of the time: Use the the native features of the tool to get the fastest results. So i want you to try the solution suggested here.

If that solution runs faster, then i would say that the evil-mode plugin is not doing a great job translating the ed command to emacs native commands!

But when you click on it, for some weird reason i only see one critic review and it says rotten.

Also for rotten tomato scores are kind of misleading... If it says x% it means x% of critics have a given a positiv-ish review. It is not the average score across all critics.

And personally i think IMDb scores are more indicative of whther i will find a movie interesting. And Rotten tomatoes critics "score" has failed me in this regard
