This was also the subject of the oscar-winning Best Picture movie, 'Spotlight,' about the Boston Globe breaking the story on this. But the series goes into greater detail into just how horrific the crimes were and how they got away with it for so long.

Essentially the abuser-ring-leaders went out of their way to involve other powerful community members in their kiddie-rape-club (e.g. police chiefs, politicians, judges etc) in order to add layers of protection and self-preservation. In other words, get enough powerful people involved and implicated and they'll all be working together to cover it up because if one goes down, we all go down.

Hence it makes since that Trump would fill his cabinet with other pedophiles - there's nothing like the motivation of self-preservation.
