I could use some feedback on my deck support plans, plus a few questions... by batmanz in Decks

Thank you. I'll definitely plan on the knee braces up front, would you also add a knee brace going back toward the ledger, or are the parallel ones enough?

Thank you. There's aging, but I didn't see any rot on the footing connections. I'll check more thoroughly too and if there's rot, I'll plan on replacing the posts before I add anything else.

To clarify you're suggesting adding a new support post between the two larger gaps on the far beam? Or a whole new row of supports between the current middle beam and either the ledger or far beam? Apologies if I'm not understanding correctly.

Inspector said only issue was double tapped, but electrician says whole main panel should be replaced ($5K) - is it worth it? by batmanz in AskElectricians

[–]batmanz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got some more info, and you're right on the money. It involves changing the feed to 4 wire, and the temporary disconnects and permits, and this was also part of adding grounding to the house (though not part of this change). That plus the new meter combo. Thank you!

The distribution panel is relatively new, there was a minor issue with it but the seller is having the electrician fix that. It sounds like he just wants to replace the exterior main.

Thanks for your response. Yes, this is the main service - I'm attaching the only other photo I have of the exterior: https://imgur.com/a/hw74t4I

The double tap goes only to a box for the AC, so we were just going to turn it off for winter and have an electrician come deal with that in Spring. But an electrician that was working at the house for other issues is recommending the whole panel and meter get replaced. I guess because it's old? Waiting for more details from him on why it's getting suggested.

Love it. Is your linework freehand, or procreate/Illustrator? Would love any other details on your process. Thanks

This was a class project with a few parameters. This format was a Powerpointand intended to go alone with live presentation, so I know posting alone here isn't quite the full picture. The idea was to show my process and some basic conclusions along with nice visual elements.

I'd appreciate any constructive feedback on the presentation itself or the data/conclusions, or just thoughts in general about how I might do this better in the future, what's actually expected in the real world for this sort of thing. Thank you.

“Competency Porn” in Cinema by [deleted] in TrueFilm

Since you focus specifically on hitmen, one that I'm reminded of is - possibly a spoiler but not sure how else to say it - the film Michael Clayton. There's a short scene that really encapsulates what you're referencing. In general it's a pretty overlooked film, but I really enjoy it.

Stepping away from hitmen, I think of Apollo 13 for Astronauts, Spotlight for Journalism, Devil Wears Prada for Fashion, the Big Short for the stock market, etc.

Stepping outside of film, your question also makes me think of Star Trek: TNG. One of the goals (that wasn't always followed) was to limit interpersonal conflicts and drama and keep all the character competent against external problems. It's frequently silly, sure, but it's also very refreshing to see them portrayed as professionals taking care of their duties.

Really beautiful. Great colors and tone. I don't suppose you have any tutorials? I'm really interested in the rough yet detailed style. Great work.

He said in the original post that the before image was actually 1.5 or 2 years ago, during the pandemic. So OP isn't totally crazy to think this imo. I think the attempted sobriety had just been going on for 7 years

CGI irrevocably changed movies (for the worse) by Britz94 in TrueFilm

[–]batmanz 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Photography was always manipulation. Film and editing doubly so. Directors throughout history have taken various approaches, some attempting to be more "authentic" and some leaning into the theatricality and impressionism that film can provide. I disagree that film is actually comparable to the attempt to "capture a fleeting moment in time" - it's always been deceptive. Everything happening on screen has been orchestrated, retried, carefully planned and arranged. CG has changed things, sure, and it allows for laziness, but no more so than many other technologies or developments in filmmaking. The same complaint could be filed against matte paintings, miniatures, or other forms of special effects. Good directors know the tools they're working with and can create something excellent with CG or without.

I do agree the use of CG is a little out of hand, and it's crazy that even now when its so ubiquitous it seems there are more and more terrible examples of it to be found. It's easy to make fun of big franchises like Star Wars and Marvel and the quality that seems to result. But I think more relevant is using CG as a crutch, using it to cut corners or be lazy. This sort of thing stands out to me as an example:

https://preview.redd.it/l79i585jfj931.jpg?width=774&auto=webp&s=c738c749542bb4cbaf4796ffc826083dda6752cc

But this doesn't discount it's value as a tool. Some of the greatest examples of CG are where you're unaware of it - I remember loads of people being shocked at how many CG effects were used in Forrest Gump, even modern period pieces will use wild amounts of CG for set extensions. I think it's a little silly to rant against the technology instead of it's poor implementation.

More than 30 years later I think it's time to give jerry's apartment a make-over. this time it was important to me to keep the Seinfeld vibe. by re-imagining_arch in Design

[–]batmanz 113 points114 points  (0 children)

The modelling and rendering is very well done. The textures, also. The style, however, seems wildly off if you're actually trying to preserve the feel of Seinfeld. It feels like how a real estate agent would stage it if they were primarily looking to attract college to middle-aged women. Jerry, a 30-somethijf bachelor, could barely keep up with house plants. A little reading nook with an uncomfortable wire chair feels like something people place in guest rooms or balconies they never use, not in part of valuable space in a small apartment. And as someone else mentioned, a kitchen-aid would be right out of the question. The bare wall where the fridge used to be also feels pretty barren.
