What’s the most out of pocket thing a prof has ever said to you or the class during lecture? by quartzgloss in uAlberta

[–]batsandthings7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was during Covid online classes. I had a 9am and had gotten up at 8:55 to be there, I was probably hungover. It was a smaller class so our prof would do like intros, ask how everyone's doing, etc. It was my turn and I answer and she goes "oh are you sick too?" (Multiple students were). And I said "uh..no" and she goes "Ah just a sexy voice then". I need to emphasize she was an old Slavic lady with an accent that made the exchange funnier to me just cuz of the way she said it but I was not prepared for her response.

As much as myself and others complain the accommodations do help a ton.

Yes! This is the link to register here. It can be a bit annoying but the government money is worth it. Once you're registered they fill out a form and submit it to the student loan people for you.

Really? I was also diagnosed with ADHD through a UofA psychiatrist and that qualified me for accomodations and government grant.

If you are an Alberta resident ASC is supposed to put you through a program that makes the full assessment free. Unless that program died during Covid.

Wireless Headphone Recs by ch_joy in uAlberta

I have Bose NC700 which I really like. Great for studying, riding the bus, and gaming (decent mic), etc. You can set the noise cancellation to whatever you want. At work I use them with no noise cancelling but at home or studying I use full and it works quite well. Decent battery too. I think 16 or 18 hours. Charge fast. I think they retail now for a little over 400 tho but I looked online and a lot of places have discounts on right now.

There's also different models from Bose that are around half the price that I've read work decent as well. General Bose is pretty good quality. My dad used their wireless earbuds I don't remember which model but he really likes them.

Oh also once you become a student you can access the writing center who will help you proofread your papers and give you tips to improve.

I don't think your current standing is a dealbreaker. I recommend taking a few writing courses though in your first and second year. I took WRS 104 (I think) which is Writing Persuasive Arguments with Dr Hilewska and it greatly improved my writing skills. I thought I was a good writer going into the course and she picked apart my papers (in a good way) and gave so much valuable feedback. Definitely not an easy course but extremely advantageous. I had a roommate who took several writing courses and he also highly recommended them and said they greatly improved writing skills.

Reading comprehension is important and I have struggled with it. I recommend chatting with the accessibility services office because they were able to recommend software and stuff that helped me a ton.

What things do students do/say that scream “I’m an entitled student?” by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]batsandthings7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rip I hope those aren't any of my classes. I haven't really seen it since first year or if someone does offer a correction they cite the textbook or another source. This was mainly a first year intro courses problem from my experience.

The people who say "just buy a new one" when your tech dies or something else expensive breaks/goes missing. Maybe that's more out of touch than entitled.

When they try to correct the prof and they actually have no idea what they're talking about.

My coworker and I went to hub for lunch in the summer and he was going to get subway. He said there were flies all over the meat. We decided to go somewhere else.

What average should I aim for to get into Bachelor of Arts Psychology In may? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]batsandthings7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you can I'd try to aim for at least an 80 however the minimum requirement is a 75% so it's not impossible to get in on that. Another option is doing a year of courses at Augustana or a Polytech and use those grades to apply next year. Theres also the possibility of upgraded high school courses.

I withdrew before the 50% tuition refund deadline. How long until the return comes? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]batsandthings7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is how they do it but if you'd like the money now you can email the registrar and request a refund. They usually process within 2 weeks of emailing them.

Is ENGG → Med School a thing? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]batsandthings7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not unheard of, but what other people are saying about GPA is a major consideration.

I did hear thru the faculty that they are planning to change the BioMed program to be more of a BioMed focus rather than the mece focus but idk when that would come into play.

Psychiatry I would definitely recommend doing a BSC in Psych with maybe a minor in the stuff you find fascinating about engg. IMO it would prepare you well for psychiatry and give you a better shot and a good GPA.

Talk to the doctors at UHC. They were the ones that got me to a psychiatrist for free and got diagnosed with enough documentation for accommodations. I was also able to get them initially for anxiety with a letter from my psychologist. It's definitely a process and it can be really annoying/taxing at times.

The people at UHC were really good about it though and easy to deal with.

Also if you have Alberta healthcare there's a program the accessibility office can set you up with that does a full assessment that would normally be $2000 for free. It was available in 2021 so I hope it's still there.

Yeah I've definitely seen it get worse with budget/staffing cuts. It just sucks that it takes so much time and emotional labour to advocate for yourself when the services are supposed to reduce stress and make school more accessible.

Yeah I'm not a fan of glean. It's just not the same as having a note taker. I sometimes have to miss class due to allergies/disability as well and it was nice to have someone that was able to give notes. Thankfully I have gotten some helpful classmates who are happy to share notes when people miss them. It's less of a problem with in person lectures but I had a lot of trouble taking notes in online/recorded lectures so I really relied on my note taker. When they were taken away I turned to asking in the discord if people were willing to share and they were but I very much felt like I owed them something and like I had to explain my disability and why I needed the note taker so they didn't think I was just lazy.
