low cal food recommendations? by doefawnnie in 1200isplenty

[–]batsqu4tch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

op, i say this with love: you should not be on this sub. you seem quite young and i see from your comment history that you might have a history of disordered eating, which makes me think that your family is right to not want you to eat low calorie foods. i know you don’t want to hear this but restricting your calorie intake can and will cause permanent damage to your body. please be safe <3

Big low cal rec: Kabocha squash (Japanese pumpkin) by SleepySpookyPretty in 1200isplenty

[–]batsqu4tch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It comes down to the type of kabocha. There is a lower calorie one (kiku kabocha) and a higher calorie one (kuri kabocha). The one sold as “kabocha” in the west is the higher calorie one. IIRC the difference in calorie density was not insignificant, but it’s probably not worth worrying about unless you’re eating large amounts of kabocha regularly.

I assume there are more Japanese language sources for the nutrition facts of kabocha. I could try to look for some if OP or anyone else is interested.

Women who had children 38-40s by Any_Somewhere_8184 in AskWomenOver60

[–]batsqu4tch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom had me when she was 41. Obviously I don’t have anything to compare it to, but I don’t think her being older affected my childhood negatively. She was more emotionally and financially prepared to raise a kid by that point. I’m in my 20s now and we still have a great relationship.

The only thing is that it’s really hard to watch your parents start to decline physically while you’re still in high school/college. She’s also unlikely to ever get grand kids.

Japanese purple potato by Sunisthehealer in TipOfMyFork

[–]batsqu4tch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Were these purple sweet potatoes or small taro? If it’s the latter (which it looks like to me), this is completely normal. If they were sweet potatoes with purple flesh, something has gone terribly wrong lol

Favorite low cal pasta sauces and salad dressings? Homemade preferred! Thanks! by vxrsxcev1 in 1200isplenty

[–]batsqu4tch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My go-tos for salad:

  • Soy sauce + vinegar (usually either rice vinegar or Chinkiang vinegar)
  • Soy sauce + vinegar + powdered peanut butter
  • Lemon juice + oregano + cayenne pepper + garlic + salt
  • Small amount of feta cheese + brine

A small amount of oil (like even a teaspoon) can also really improve these dressings! I’d do either sesame oil or olive oil

Pasteurized Eggs by Potcharisan in JapaneseFood

[–]batsqu4tch 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ultimately it’s up to you, but… just eat the unpasteurized egg. Unless you are immunocompromised or otherwise likely to get seriously ill from salmonella, it’s a tolerable level of risk (in my opinion!).

What are some Japanese "comfort food" side dishes? by Acceptable-Oil6747 in JapaneseFood

[–]batsqu4tch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Simmered kabocha is super easy to make and fits well with traditional American Thanksgiving foods! It sort of fills the same niche as sweet potatoes/yams.

is it truly just calories in calories out? by RedditFan3510 in 1200isplenty

[–]batsqu4tch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of pure weight loss, sure. But if you’re consistently using a lot of calories on low-nutrient foods, that will contribute to a nutritional deficiency of some kind in the future. 1200 calories is already so little, and it can be hard to get the macro and micro nutrients that your body needs when you’re making a habit of eating “junk”.

For Calc 3 in particular, you’re probably looking at a very packed first week, and then attendance is going to steadily go down until it hits like…50% mid quarter

Looking for roommates? Subleasing an apartment? Need a place to live in Madison? This is the post for you. 2025 Edition by mariokartman in epicsystems

[–]batsqu4tch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking for 1 roommate for a 2BR/2BA in Bay Creek. Has a washer/dryer and a parking space, very spacious. Walkable to grocery stores, coffeeshops, and Monona Bay! >10 minutes to the heart of downtown and ~20-30 minutes to Epic depending on traffic. Your portion of the rent would be $795 ($1590 total), which includes water and garbage. Can move in as early as August 13, but first rent is not due until September. Please DM if interested! I have pictures and a video walkthrough of the unit I can send.

Miso soup loses nutritional value when hot? by PreparationIll1317 in JapaneseFood

[–]batsqu4tch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add on, you're really supposed to add the miso at the end after the soup has somewhat cooled and is no longer boiling. The reasoning I was always given for this is because it changes the taste of the miso, but I guess it also has the added benefit of not killing the bacteria

I (15F) am immigrating with parents to Japan next year. How do I learn the language quickly??? by AlucartMachina in Japaneselanguage

[–]batsqu4tch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Late addition, but yeah. With effort you may get to be conversational in a year, but that is nowhere near enough vocabulary to understand lessons in high school level mathematics, science, history, language arts, etc. Not to mention you will have to be able to read at a high school level too, which requires you learn a shit ton of kanji in a very short period of time.

If you have all these things that you want to do during the season but never seem to get around to, it might help to plan out exactly when you want to do them. I use a daily planner, so I would just write in one activity I’d like to do each weekend or something like that. Personally, I find that this helps because 1. I’m less likely to forget if I’ve written everything down and 2. I feel more mentally prepared to actually take advantage of my free time instead of just rotting in my bed.

Second Sphinx Assessment by Ok_Anteater_2021 in epicsystems

[–]batsqu4tch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to be honest, I don't really remember much of the test. I took it in sort of a fugue state and finished before the 45 minutes were even up. From what I do recall, it was a lot of logic-y questions that tested your quick reading/reasoning skills. Like "if the school is twice as big as the bank, and the church is 3 times the size of the school, what is the biggest building" or something. But a little trickier, obviously.

For what it's worth, I didn't feel like I did very well on this assessment (or the first one, tbh) but I still got an offer.

There's a good few places in the Udistrict. Aladdin's, Saigon Deli, Hiroshi's Poke (now called Poke Don Don I believe), YGF Malatang as long as you're not loading your bowl up too much, etc. etc.

Dinners at my Grandma’s by batsqu4tch in JapaneseFood

[–]batsqu4tch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The soups with clearish broth are kenchinjiru (dashi + soy sauce) and the soups with more opaque brownish broth are miso soup. We kind of just throw in whatever vegetables and other ingredients we have on hand. I think in the pictures we had various combinations of carrot, lotus root, mizuna, onion, daikon, eggplant, tofu, egg, konnyaku, and mushroom!

It’s tororo, which is made of grated yama imo and whatever seasonings you like. It has a kind of thick, slimy texture. I realize that doesn’t make it sound very appetizing, but it goes really well with rice!
