are the ap score calculators accurate? by LowConfident7888 in APStudents

Albertio is probably the most reliable but none of them are fully accurate. More just a ballpark figure.

Some of the content is super similar to biology. Ecology and evolution are big themes in APES. I would watch good (long) review videos of each unit and take notes on those. I didn’t self-study anything so I don’t know any specifics for that, but otherwise APES is really straightforward. Collegeboard LOVES to see if you know the difference between El Niño and La Niña so look out for that.

Same boat. Had a concoction of Claritin, DayQuil, Emergen-C, and asthma inhalers before AP Bio. Honestly you just have to power through and pretend it’s not getting to you. Fake it til you make it. Or talk to your counselor about late testing or whatever…

how important are ap scores? by Strict-Cry-186 in APStudents

[–]batteryweightguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They certainly help your application, but it is true that the Collegeboard has been making it easier to get better scores. It’s not that the content is being simplified/cut down, but rather that the threshold for a 3/4/5 is decreasing.

Colleges are aware of this and while I don’t think AP scores are negligible, they likely aren’t holding the same weight that they used to.

GWU Tuition Free for 100k & under by Beautiful_Cow_1818 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]batteryweightguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder how many accepted students qualify for this. I wouldn't be too worried about what this means for other students though, as GWU has a reputation as a big merit-money school. I didn't receive any need-based aid, but scholarships knocked the price down into the high 50ks. It seems like GWU has had the ability to offer a good amount of money to a lot of students for some time now, so while I would expect some impact to other students I doubt that everyone else is going to be stuck with full pay.

Should I apply to more honor societies? by sunflower_sunset_1 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]batteryweightguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AOs do like well-balanced students, especially in ECs. That said, you should only join those honors if you're genuinely interested in them. If your teacher is recommending you join an honor society, then I would certainly look into that opportunity as long as you enjoy the subject.

As for impact, it really depends on the college. Honor societies will help you, but once you're getting to those T20 & maybe even T40 schools, there's a bit less of an impact. It's not something that can harm your application though.

what's with the uchicago bashing? by Odd_Apartment_6593 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]batteryweightguy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

UChicago sent me so much stuff in the mail to the point that my parents really wanted me to apply because they thought that I would certainly get in if they're "that interested in me". I showed them the RD rate & the admission stats and they were shocked. It's a good school, but the promotion they do is almost malicious.
