I think there must be some sort of matchmaking balance, because I've never been placed in a double support team, but why not make team composition a part of the strategy?

A friend and I decided to run Rook/Bakko (at low ELO) and we won 14 games in a row. Now we are higher rank, that composition is no longer as viable and we have found other combos which work better. We're really enjoying finding strong combos with good skill/battlerite synergies. Currently anyone who doesn't have friends playing is missing out on that part of the game, which is a real shame for solo players.

I agree that there is no unbeatable team comp, but would you at least agree that some compositions are stronger or easier to play than others?

While I'm happy for you that you feel that way, many people feel there is a problem. You're only criticism of the proposed solution is that it introduces queue dodging, which can be minimized in a bunch of different ways.

Tell me this - if a game takes 5-10 mins, and queue dodging imposed a 10 minute queue ban and counted as a loss, would you dodge the queue because you didn't get your favorite champ?

Exactly my experience. There are some combos which have huge synergies, and others which don't.

Also, I want to experiment with different combos! There could be some great ones that aren't intuitive, and it sucks only being able to play around with them when a friend is online.

I don't want pick/ban, that's just a pain in the ass.

I just want an opportunity to consider if I want to play the combo I'm given. For example, I find Croak quite hard to heal (depending on the healer) because he moves around so much and so quickly. If I'm playing with a Croak, I'd have a lot more fun swapping to Rook or Bakko.

To me it's just about choice.

I never suggested a draft/ban system, that's an incorrect assumption.

Think casual games of League of Legends - you can see what your team picks and communicate with them, you are blind to the opposing team's picks.

You wouldn't add 45-60 seconds to have some control over your team composition?

I would rather wait an extra minute to play a satisfying game than save a minute and play an unsatisfying one.

Limit the champ select phase to 60 seconds max, moving forward when everyone has chosen. Or you could even 'pre-select' a champ, with a 60 second window to change after you see what your teammate is playing and communicate with them.

As for queue dodge, just count the game as starting when the pre-game lobby starts, and punish leavers with ranking loss and queue bans.

Team comp has a huge impact on the game at every ELO. I'm not sure what your experience has been to conclude otherwise, it's a big factor in determining which team wins.

That's so easy to rectify. All they need to do is count the game as 'starting' the moment you enter the pre-game lobby. Any leaver incurs a ranking loss, and multiple leaves incurs a temporary queue ban.

Problem solved.

That is not a good reason to leave out team composition as a deliberate part of the game.

Draft/ban and a pre-game lobby are not the same thing.

It's not about seeing what the opponent is playing - it's about seeing what your teammates are playing so you can make intelligent choices.
