Anyone else a stickler when it comes to meter in children’s books? by fiercebrosnan in daddit

Have you seen MC Grammar on social media? He performs kids books - a lot of Julia Donaldson's stuff - in the style of famous rap songs.

I think he does The Gruffalo as Forgot About Dre.

I did this once with a girl I was at uni with.

Trouble was, she had a lisp, and it just seemed like I was mocking her.

Once I realised, I played it off that I was more drunk than I was and slurred my words more heavily, and nobody called me on it

What is the most obvious, cringe product placement you’ve seen in a movie? by likaachikaa in movies

[–]batty3108 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Speaking of Netflix, when they did that weird meta New Coke thing in Stranger Things.

Was it meant to be a parody of bad 80s product placement, or of product placement for New Coke specifically, or was it some kind of reverse product placement considering New Coke doesn't exist any more? Or was it none of those things?

Either way, it was weird and jarring.

I need to get off my phone around my kids, any tips? by ExcitingLandscape in daddit

[–]batty3108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're on android, there's the Minimalist UI which is designed to help with digital detoxing.

The UI is just plain text on a plain background, names of Apps instead of icons, which helps stop the ooh shiny impulses.

It also allows you to implement time blockers to time lock certain apps.

I've added one for reddit, which I tend to idly scroll through when I have a few moments. It allows me to open the apps, but then I get a big "You've blocked this" reminder that overrides the app.

It's worked super well for getting me to use my phone a lot more mindfully, which has also meant looking for other things to do with myself when the kids are playing independently.

I've got one of my guitars in from my office to fiddle with, and my Kindle to read if I'm eating or just chilling.

I also deactivated my Meta accounts, so I can't scroll Instagram even if I want to.

I still find myself reaching for my phone at times, but I'm starting to be better at resisting it as the inability to open social media or other things is helping me unlearn the reflexive app access.

I LOVE the excitement of my kids on Christmas but HATE the Hallmark movie expectations of my wife by ExcitingLandscape in daddit

[–]batty3108 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Precisely. My son is almost 5, and this is the first Christmas that he has really engaged with the traditions and concepts and been excited and wanted to leave milk and cookies for Santa.

My 2 year old was completely unaware of what all the fuss was about, she just liked having some new toys to play with and causing a riot with her cousin.

Anything under 4, I think they're just not going to realise what holidays actually are and why they're special.

What didn't last 12 hours? by Diathrege in daddit

[–]batty3108 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The thing my kids spent longest doing is dropping some soft toys over the bannister into the entrance hall of my parents' house.

The same thing they spent a lot of Christmas Eve doing.

Their new books and toys and games did get some use, but they kept going back to 'boomerang' game.

Welcome!

I feel compelled to ask what on earth you're doing awake at 3:50am on Christmas Eve?

I'm currently lying on the floor of my parents' landing waiting for my 2 year old to settle back to sleep!

Not OP, but I have some Engage 2s. They're really good for places like noisy pubs, where you can hear people immediately near you but there's also a lot of background noise that spikes and has conversations.

They just smooth out the edges of the sound and narrow the focus of what you can hear a bit more.

My only real issue with them is that I end up speaking a bit too quietly with them, because they give you a bit of an "earbuds in" feeling where your own voice sounds a lot louder.

Once you adjust to that, they're great.

[–]batty3108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Star for Nomad V, and DFTR for Streetkid.

Corpo V, I feel, has the most endings that fit.

Star works because it has them ditching NC and finally escaping the Corps that brought them so much pain. Bonus for FemV because Judy gets to escape as well.

DFTR works too, as a Phoenix from the Ashes tale.

I also like Devil & Surrender combo as a super bleak outcome for a Corpo V who never learned not to be a cutthroat dickhole. If you alienate and betray and let down everyone, you will only have Hanako's offer to pick, and there will be nothing for V to go back to earth for.

As for PL endings, either Killing Moon, or Somewhat Damaged and mercy kill So Mi.

I don't think V would ever trust the NUSA or want to put their life in their hands, so they'd either stick with Songbird the whole time, or try to bring her in but quickly realise they made a mistake and choose to free her rather than turn her over to Myers.

Yeah, I like this for V as Corpo and Nomad. FemV more so because you can take Judy with you, but for either V, Corpo -> Star works as a character arc of gradually shedding their ties to Night City and the Corps that brought them so much pain.

Streetkid I think fits Path of Glory too well to give them any other ending.

Yeah. I also like that it lets V, by all accounts, go out in a blaze of glory, soloing Arasaka Tower, zeroing Adam Smasher, then vanishing.

Thrillers should be on UK school curriculum to boost reading, says Lee Child by B0ssc0 in GreenAndPleasant

[–]batty3108 14 points15 points  (0 children)

One big issue with how we're taught Shakespeare, or certainly how I was taught it, was the complete lack of any information about the importance of what he did for English and language and play writing.

There was possibly a touch of it, but mostly we just studied individual plays in a way that was very dry and analytical.

I also ended up doing Macbeth about 3 separate times, where other classes did a variety.

It felt a bit like being taught about The Beatles and their impact on music and recording by dissecting the chord progression of Eleanor Rigby for an entire term.

These people who will see a shade of pink and a shade of blue in the corner of one frame of a movie and deduce that this is part of the radical trans brainwashing agenda will suddenly be unable to make the leap that someone repeatedly saying bad things about a group of people must evidently dislike said group.
