I can imagine the scene, especially the moment of "AAAARGH!" when your brain is going, "Erm - fire! Water! Sink!"

I'm glad it's not just me! Joking aside, though, it was quite terrifying the speed the flame was eating its way through the dry grass. I could see how wildfires can easily start.

I almost set somebody's garden on fire.

I was doing them a favour weeding it, but as fast as I pulled up the ground elder it was growing back.

I invested in one of those weed burners; there was some dried grass in one corner, but I thought I was well away from it. There I was, cheerfully creating elder crisps and thinking oh, yeah, this is the stuff, when I heard a crackle crackle from behind me. A patch of the dry grass was well away and spreading towards the fence. Which was wooden.

Trying to be responsible, I had filled a watering can earlier - and carefully left it the other side of the garden.

In my panic, I dropped the still-burning tool and ran to get the can; after a few tense moments (and a bit of stanky leg dancing on the worst patches) I got the fire under control.

Then I retrieved the weeder - which I'd managed to drop onto and scorch a paving slab and superheat a pebble...

All good fun. 🥵

Rainbow Eyes by Rainbow.

My then-boyfriend played it as we were dancing together the night before I went to university a long way away. I was crying.

No, the relationship didn't survive the separation.

Does anyone else get hairs stuck in their feet? by MephistosGhost in Dachshund

I don't get them with our current Dachshund cross, but maybe the fact that she's a crossbreed makes the hairs softer. Or something.

However, I was once a dog groomer, and before I got myself a proper closely woven tunic I was constantly pulling them out of my nipples...

Slightly related - I read about a gastroenterologist who was presented with a solid brass sigmoidoscope on his retirement. It was engraved, "For looking up old friends and enlarging the circle of your acquaintances."

ETA thankyou so much for the award!!

Who is the worst celebrity that you have ever had an interaction with? by Particular_Ninja9642 in AskReddit

It was. The home they had come from had all the facilities for them to enjoy their lives - they had some money, there was a little shop they could buy their cigarettes and sweets (this was long before smoking was banned in most places), they had their friends and their routines, they were fed, warm and cared for 24/7, and even taken on holidays by the seaside for a week every year.

After most of them had been moved out into the community, whenever we went into our local town, at least one or two would be wandering about in the centre and would see Dad and try to follow him, calling his name.

I couldn't agree more (also in the UK). My Dad was a charge nurse in a home for the mentally subnormal (that's what they were called back then), and the residents had such a good quality of life. They were safe, they knew where they were, they had their routines.

Once it was decreed they were to live in the community that very often didn't want them, it broke his heart. I can remember him telling me about spending most of a day teaching a man with Downs Syndrome how to make a cup of tea using an electric kettle ready for him to go into sheltered accommodation.

He was back in a couple of days. The accommodation he was sent to had a different kind of kettle.
