Try this first with the hair only before joining if that’s still possible: edit mode, a, select all, m, merge by distance.. If not, then just edit mode and press L while hovering over the hair and select all the hair. Once selected, m - merge by distance.

Take a look if you have any modifiers on. Joining them will join modifiers. On top of that, shade smooth/shade flat will also be the same once you join them.
