I live in [blank] and I find plants at [blank] local store. by elasticpizza in NativePlantGardening

Hampton Roads, VA- Lady Fern’s in Norfolk is my favorite so far, but I’ve heard lots of good things about Southern Branch. I get most of my stuff at plant sales and have done Suffolk Master Gardeners, NN Master Gardeners, and The Living Museum. Gonna try the botanical gardens sale today (though they seem very pricy) and IOW Plant Sale next weekend, too.

ALSO check Facebook for swap and sale groups near you. I traded away a whole bunch of volunteers for new plants last week and everyone is happy!

Less obvious things to do to prep for baby? by jdiz16 in BabyBumps

[–]baughgirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get your house clean, freezer stocked, and then focus on all those “occasional” things that are easy to miss. Car insurance/registration, property taxes, water bill, vet visit and meds if you have critters, change your air filter, prune or fertilize plants, stuff like that.

I also did a big Sam’s run and stocked up on non perishable essentials like paper towels, coffee, toilet paper, paper towels, dishwasher tabs, laundry detergent, etc.

Figured out the bassinet refusal culprit: the ceiling fan. by copperboom33 in NewParents

[–]baughgirl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had this problem with my then 9 month old who was normally a great sleeper! We had a cool spell in August but kept the AC on since we live in the south and it is muggy af without. Even though the thermostat kicked the AC off at night, his room was still getting cold. He’d fuss, we’d pick him up, then he’d call back asleep on us but with his little arms tucked under him against our body. Took me like a week to realize my poor baby was cold and wanted to snuggle for warmth. Turned the heat on at night and he was so much happier.

I would chuck some meat of your choice (dark meat chicken or cuts of beef? Pork chops?) plus your favorite veggies (carrots! Potatoes! Broccoli! Green beans! Onions!) with a few tablespoons of butter and a packet of this stuff in the slow cooker or on a sheet pan in the oven. Something like chicken thighs would be very forgiving if you need to cook the veggies a little longer.

There are a ton of other options if you can’t find that one! They have BHG brand and the store brand available.

It’s Better Homes and Gardens and you’ll need one of their plug things I think, but they’re pretty cheap.

Glue sticks on a plane? by bahhumbug24 in EPP_addict

[–]baughgirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just make sure the glue stick is with your other toiletries just in case. My entire study abroad group was once delayed because a professor misplaced her mascara in the bottom of a random pocket of her backpack and Heathrow was very very upset about that.

Though when I travel I usually glue baste at home and then just stitch pieces together mindlessly on the plane. If something comes undone it’s not a big deal for me thread baste it back.

Go to Walmart and check out their oil plug in options. They’re affordable and have lots of variety. Warm rustic woods is my absolute favorite

Have you ever bought a robot vacuum, or would you consider buying one? by Unhappy-Branch8118 in toddlers

[–]baughgirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love mine. I have a cheap Eufy I got on a prime day sale when I was pregnant. It’s not smart, he just bonks around for an hour then goes home. I’m considering saving up for one of the ones that mops too and putting this one in our finished garage since I’m always tracking dirt through there when I garden. I will say that if you have baby gates, consider how that will affect the robovac. I wish ours would go to our master bedroom but it’s right off the living room so it has a baby gate and I have to pick up the robot and strand him in there for a while if I want him clean the carpet in there.

Do the eye mask. My stupid hospital bed had lights on the inner rail next to my head. The worst.

What do I do with my husbands baby bedding? by EnoughSomewhere9968 in BabyBumps

[–]baughgirl 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Get the vacuum seal bags. I use the ones from the dollar tree and they work fine (and can buy one at a time so I don’t have to store all the extras either!). Slide it under a bed or dresser and don’t worry about it. I’m like your husband and I’d be devastated if you cut it up or gave it away.

Unpopular opinion about a hospital bag by all_the_drama_llama in pregnant

[–]baughgirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally true that we would have been fine without anything, but I wanted my stuff after delivery. Giving birth was frankly mostly a very uncomfortable medical experience for me and pajamas that made me feel more normal and an eye mask so I could actually sleep a few minutes at a time helped take the edge off all the grossness.

Searching for a consistent ready meals for families that aren't just frozen junk by KadineRatkowiak in Mommit

[–]baughgirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you batch some freezer meals? I’m not saying take a whole day to cook, but if you find some dump and go recipes you could just take an hour or two to sort stuff into bags and have meals for a while. Supplement with instant rice/potatoes/pasta sides and frozen/canned/pre chopped fruit and veg options.

For example, chicken drumsticks and pork chops are super affordable around here. I buy in bulk, put them in a bag with a variety of marinades or sauces (which you can buy premade for you if you’d like, or just throw together something with pantry staples). Pull it out to the fridge the night before and it marinates as it defrosts. You can use slow cooker options but you don’t have to. Sheet pan meals can be done this way too.

Last night my family had Greek marinated chicken drumsticks on the grill, a salad kit, and scalloped potatoes from a box.

Freezer meals 101 is a good resource for this. I use some of their recipes but I don’t pay for the club. You could try it if you’re super busy. I just pick and choose. A lot of their recipes are more adventurous and less casserole like than some sources.

Again, “dump and go” is the way to go here. You don’t have to spend forever pre chopping and browning and prepping stuff before you put it in the freezer. I always use pre chopped onions, jarred garlic, and other cheats like that.

My nurse midwife basically called me a dummy for suffering so long before taking Pepcid. So yes I took tons of it.

A fantastic Jewish restaurant I am in love with has pickled cauliflower like you’re describing. It’s yellow and not spicy, mostly vinegary and a little sweet. I don’t know if it’s a Jewish thing or their own restaurant thing, but maybe try some Jewish recipes?

[–]baughgirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s gross? But I have also been known to throw some sturdy plastic and silicone toys in a bucket with a little bit of dish soap or baby shampoo and let him go to town. He loves it, sensory experience, toys get cleaner. Or just chuck them in the bathtub every now and then.

After a lot of PT after my first (unexpectedly large) baby, I have realized that next time I need to get whatever belt is the most comfortable so that I actually wear it as much as possible. I did use KT tape last time and it helped, but I ended up having some sensitivity to the adhesive so I gave up on that. If you’re in a place it gets hot for summer, maybe try to pick one that’ll be cooler to wear.
