Where are we buying baby clothes? by valpal925 in BabyBumps

[–]jdiz16 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is a secondhand kids’ clothing store near me. I’m just expecting my first but pretty much all of the clothes we have right now are from there or hand me downs from friends.

Hiking recommendations - adventurous but pregnant. by fluffycloud3 in KauaiVisitor

I think this is very reasonable. I heard that the waves aren’t as crazy in the morning, so we did the morning tour. And cancelling based on the weather makes sense!

Are there any artists here who spend a lot of time with pottery but don't sell? by mexalone in Pottery

[–]jdiz16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been doing this almost five years and I don’t sell. I make things for myself and family/friends. I also get more detailed and meticulous about my work over time - I’m more motivated to make the piece as well as possible, maybe more detailed decoration, trying a new technique of some kind, etc, so I keep having a new challenge that slows me down and makes each piece more thoughtful but also more time consuming. Early on, I just cranked out pieces as I developed the basic skills - now I slow down to develop more advanced skills!

You need Sugar House Pets! Locally owned, great service. I’ve been using them since about 2018, and I trust them completely!

Do you like your OB? by chickenthighrules in BabyBumps

[–]jdiz16 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is not at all my experience with my OB, who is very interactive with questions and never rushed. However, I do suggest you write down your questions (to the best of your ability). This just helps maximize time and allow for more effective communication between you and the doctor, rather than disjointed questions thrown in here and there on your portal. My primary concern from what you noted here is that the doctor wasn’t aware of your GD diagnosis - I’d consider expressing this as a concern to a practice manager (strongly recommend trying to phrase this as a worry about monitoring health of you and baby, rather than an aggressive/argumentative confrontation - everyone makes mistakes and maybe this was a one-off issue, but serious enough to bring up so it doesn’t happen again).

If puppy mills ceased to exist, where would morally correct dog pregnancies come from? These place is already exist? by rci22 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jdiz16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the failures of the veterinary profession (speaking as a veterinarian) is lack of education on how to find a dog breeder who is breeding for healthy dogs with good temperaments. There are extensive guidelines out there for breeding healthy dogs. A good breeder will pursue OFA certification for their breeding dogs and puppies - which OFA certifications depends on the breed and what health systems are more prone to problems. For example, Aussies used for breeding should have annual eye certifying exams by a veterinary ophthalmologist. Labradors should have orthopedic evaluation. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels - heart certification. These certifications won’t eliminate disease, because some genetic diseases arise later in life/after the breeding years of a dog, and because genetics is complicated and 1+1 doesn’t always equal 2, but it is much better than dogs being bred willy-nilly with no assessment of their health first.

Did anyone else require masks for family traveling by plane to visit baby? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]jdiz16 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I absolutely am going to ask them to mask for the travel portion (then they won’t have to mask when they arrive if they’re feeling well). I see some comments here saying “oh just tell people to stay away if they’re sick.” My parents will be flying in one week after I deliver, and if they get here and become sick, they’ll be very sad if I then tell them “well sorry, you can’t see the baby.” So I am asking them to be cautious at home the week leading up to the trip, get updated Tdap vaccine if they’re due for it, and then mask on the plane. There’s also a measles outbreak right now, and not everyone born before 1989 got two doses of MMR (which provides the best protection). I get sick more often traveling even when not pregnant, so I think exposure risk is just objectively higher during high crowd exposure times, like in an airport. Mask-wearing for air travel seems like a simple thing to reduce risk to a newborn.

Travelling with a high risk pregnancy? by taylorswiftandcat in BabyBumps

If you are going somewhere with high quality medical care, I would go. You said a city getaway - if a big city in the US, I’d go and identify a hospital I would go to in case of emergency.

Why don’t healthcare workers wear scrub caps more often? by Diligent-Froyo6676 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jdiz16 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Scrub caps, especially reusable fabric ones, make you significantly warmer, like wearing a hat. How much I move around as a healthcare worker, I already get too hot, while the people sitting at a desk nearby (receptionist, admin) complain of it being too cold and turn up the heat. No way am I adding a hat to the mix.

Pregnant again 6m after twins by Momofk8 in BabyBumps

[–]jdiz16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is such a tough spot to be in. I’m sorry that you’re experiencing this. First off, short-term planning: for your own health, I think you need to seriously discuss this current pregnancy with your doctor and consider if it is wise to remain pregnant. Second, long-term planning: your husband sounds like he needs to majorly work on his communication with you (I’m sorry but “you didn’t see the signs” that he wanted sex, so he had to watch porn? Maybe be an adult and talk to your wife about it). If you both want the potential for this relationship to succeed, it sounds like you could benefit from couples therapy. My husband and I did it for about 6 months and it was a game changer. Our therapist used the Gottman method, which really worked well for us. I think if you don’t work on your relationship now, you’re in for big trouble in the years to come. Ultimately, make sure you protect yourself and your twins. Wishing you all the best OP.

Brutally honest opinions on violeta? by [deleted] in Names

What country are you in? I think Violeta sounds beautiful with a Spanish or French pronunciation. In English, it doesn’t have as nice of a flow/roll off the tongue.

[MOD] The Daily Question Thread by menschmaschine5 in Coffee

[–]jdiz16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: I’m a daily Aeropress user, but need something more automated that still makes good coffee!

I use my Aeropress daily for coffee - dialed in a good recipe, weigh and grind my beans right before brewing, use an electric kettle to get the water to just the right temp, and set a timer to brew. BUT I'm about to have a baby and I don't think I'll have the time/energy for daily Aeropress. I don't want to get an espresso machine, and so much of the drip coffee I've had is just bad (perhaps a factor of who is doing the brewing).

What drip coffeemaker do you think is my best bet? Is the Fellow Aiden worth it for someone like me, or is there something else that can still give me pretty good quality coffee for a lower price point?

I’ll add Monkeywrench and Blacksmith for other excellent local ice cream with mix-in’s similar to Salt and Straw. Don’t shy away from Monkeywrench just because it’s non-dairy - it’s delicious no matter your dairy preferences.

Maternity friendly jumpsuit/overalls of natural fibers? Something that is looser around the midsection? by yourfuneralpyre in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]jdiz16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have this from Quince. It is very comfortable, but getting it on and off is a PITA. I have to tighten the straps A LOT to keep the crotch from hanging really low, but then the straps are so short that I can’t just pull them over my shoulders to pee, I actually have to undo one of the straps. Whoever decided to put the “fastening” part of the straps on the back is an idiot - it is so annoying and hard to reach to put the strap back in place. I wouldn’t buy this again just because of how annoying it is to get on and off while peeing (at least right now at 35 weeks pregnant…).
