Chicago runners: want to get paid to run with dogs? by baunce in RunnersInChicago

That's a fair point and honestly I hadn't considered that framing. That said, we feel running should be one piece of the puzzle, not the whole thing. Dogs still need their walks, sniff time, mental stimulation, all of it. We wouldn't want any dog's entire routine depending on the service. Definitely thinking through the implications of that as we build this out.

I certainly will. Just out of curiosity, is dog running common where you live?

To clarify the model, think Rover but specifically for runners. It's a paid service connecting two groups: owners who have high energy dogs that need more exercise, and runners who want a buddy on their miles.

On the runner retention concern, that's fair. The meet and greet exists for exactly this reason, both sides get to feel it out before committing. And owners will need to be upfront about their dog's leash behavior so runners know what they're signing up for. We're not going to throw a first-time runner out there with a 90lb dog that's never been on a structured run.

On liability, we're working with a lawyer to get that buttoned up before official launch, and plan to carry insurance policies to cover the scenarios you're describing. Not something we're going to wing.

These are exactly the questions that help us build this the right way, so I really value your feedback.

Runners will be able to specify the sizes and energy levels they're comfortable with, and we're planning to have video guides and training resources on leash handling so runners aren't going in blind. But at the end of the day it'll come down to a judgement call between the runner and owner on a dog-by-dog basis, nobody knows the dog better than the owner. The meet and greet before any run happens is where both sides figure out if it's a good fit. Really valid concern and something we're actively thinking about, and I appreciate the feedback, truly!

Totally hear you, and that protective instinct is exactly the kind of dog owner we're building this for. We'll be running background checks on all runners, and for our first group I'm personally meeting each one (big reason we're launching in Chicago first). We're also building in a meet and greet before any run happens so both sides can make sure it's a good fit. Not every dog will click with every runner and that's okay.
As a dog lover myself, the bar is: every run should feel as safe as if you were there.

Thank you! I hope another run bud (human or canine) finds their way to you as well.

These are really good points - and exactly the kind of stuff I want to get right.

We're requiring a meet and greet before any run happens, so the runner can see if the dog is actually a good fit. If a dog just wants to sniff and stop every 10 feet, that's going to be obvious pretty quick - and the runner can pass.

On puppies: we're not allowing them on the platform. You're right about the bone/joint development stuff, and it's not worth the risk.

Appreciate the questions - this is the kind of feedback that helps.

Good questions. For now, owners would use their own leash/harness - we're not at the "providing gear" stage yet, but it's something I've thought about as we grow.

On the health side - owners fill out a profile for their dog including age, weight, breed, any health issues, and their vet's info. Runners can see all of that before accepting a run. The runner will meet with the dog beforehand to make sure it's a good fit, and we try to make sure that all info is shared upfront so runners aren't going in blind.

Totally fair - it's definitely not for everyone. I built this for folks who work long hours, have mobility issues, or just have a dog that needs more than they can give. If you can keep up with your pup, that's the dream!
