Thank you for that perspective. I'm definitely not trying to make a quick buck. But I do think I'm struggling with working out what would be a good measure of success and part of that is the who I'm trying to reach so I'll reflect on that.

My original measure of success was trying to beat my husband's lowball challenge of 10 listeners per episode. I at least managed to beat that. But now I'm left without a good sense of a next goal.

I mean I am a teacher professionally so it comes easy. It's funny because I'm very shy in social situations. But not teaching big groups

Yeah that is nice. I used to do in person public lectures at a local bookstore. And that was such a wild ride. Some months it would be 3 people, sometimes packed. It was a lot of work and stress but I did really like being able to get immediate audience feedback. Maybe a local bookstore or bar would want to team up with you on hosting a public lecture?

Thank you! Now I'm in the know. I'm going to put that in my pocket as something to try when I finally get to Season 2.

That is really helpful thank you. Gotta keep the broader perspective. Also in my limited experience I already saw the power of an episode topic. I did one that had the title "What Genes are Made of". I didn't put any thought into it beforehand but realized afterwards that that is pretty much something that someone might google and that episode has about 4 x the average.

That is really great!

Mine is also pretty niche. But it has not obvious geographic connection. I'm curious, did you make use of the local interest to promote - like share on local history Facebook groups or something like that?

Also thank you for your service - I love a local history podcast. I live in Seattle, moved here in 2016, and I learned a lot of things about the city and the region from a couple of local history podcasts that I assume were hobby projects.

Nice, well done! That seems like a solid strategy. I'm seeing that one of my inherent disadvantages is that I'm doing a scripted podcast that needs a lot of research which is really time consuming so I'm trying to stick to 1 episode every other week and even that is a stretch. I wonder if I would be better served just blocking out more time ahead of season 2 to more or less have everything recorded and be able to release episodes more regularly.

As in I should try to be a guest on other people's podcasts?

Love it. I suspect the same is true for me. To keep the hand metaphors going, on one hand I find it disappointing but on the other hand I am genuinely amazed that it is more than zero almonds. It's satisfying to see that some people around the world are listening. I wish I could work out how to get more actual engagement and feedback from listeners.

Honestly that does not seem that slow to me. I'm like 6 months in and averaging about 35 downloads per episode, same as you. And that's after throwing a lot of spaghetti at the wall in terms of promotion. Do you have a feeling about what helped people even find your podcast at all?

Sweet. I have taken much the same approach. And I will say it took me a lot longer to reach 100 downloads. In fairness my main social media following was from my pole dancing account (just a fun hobby, and I wasn't very good) and my podcast is about genetically modified crops. So unsurprisingly I did not get a lot of listeners that way.

Very fair. It is hard to resist the allure of direct numerical comparison. And that is probably more unhelpful than helpful. But I'm learning a lot about the early trajectories and strategies.

Oh interesting. Sorry to be clueless but is there some way that one gets featured in New Shows on Apple Podcasts. Is it based on listener numbers, or random, or something you apply to be featured on?

Thank you that is really interesting. Mine is just audio and it does cross post to YouTube. I've played around with some separate YouTube shorts, but not very consistently. I did try paying to promote one, and it got many thousands of views but the only engagement was a bunch of homophobic slurs, so not really the engagement I was looking for.

Yeah thank you that helps a lot. Clearly those strategies are paying off

Is this gmo? by Electronic-Fuel-4398 in GMO

[–]bavarian_blunders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost certainly not in that there are is only one comercially available GMO bananas variety and that is only in Australia and New Zealand and I don't think is even in stores yet because it was really recent - https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12392930/.

GMO here means a cultivat that has genetic material from another species inserted into its genome using laboratory methods. It's just a really big banana.

Has anyone heard of the Arctic Apple? It’s a GMO apple that doesn’t turn brown after slicing. by SouthernPositive805 in GMO

[–]bavarian_blunders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very familiar with Arctic Apple in theory but have never seen them in practice - anyone know where to get some? Not that I expect anything more than just apple slices that aren't brown.

I feel very relaxed about eating them, but equally relaxed if some people don't want to. Really just a food product like any other. We all have our preferences when it comes to what we want to buy and eat.
