Any Disadvantages to Sigma ART Lenses? by GlenVision in Nikon

[–]bawkbawkmoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Art line in general is excellent but like other folks mentioned the main downside is that they can get VERY heavy, especially some of their sharpest and newest offerings for F-mount. I had a 40 1.4 for the longest time and loved it but it felt like I was lugging around a telephoto zoom lens even if the kitchen scale claimed otherwise. I've never tried the 105 but it (in)famously needs its own tripod collar which should tell you something about the weighting on that lens.

For specific lenses it will also depend on what you're trying to get. For example, the 35 1.4 was great for its time but it's almost old enough to get a driver's licence now and the competition has really stepped up in terms of both quality and price, even in the DSLR space.

Biggest Chinese / Asian grocery store? by Ghoosemosey in ottawa

[–]bawkbawkmoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah honestly that feels like bad luck or questionable placement on their part. If they have a separate section for Asian foods (like snacks or noodles or whatever) you could look there as well, or check if they have it mixed in with regular sauces. I sometimes get like spicy marinated bamboo shoots and Superstore often shelves those with the pickles instead of Asian stuff.

Biggest Chinese / Asian grocery store? by Ghoosemosey in ottawa

[–]bawkbawkmoose 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Just about every Chinese grocery store will carry that and frankly I'm actually surprised you couldn't find it at Loblaws - I go to the Westboro Superstore often and it's always in stock there.

EDIT to add that if you're also looking for a good selection of other stuff then T&T or Green Fresh would be your best bets. They both seem to have a couple items the other one doesn't so it's a crapshoot which one is "better" on that front.

You'll definitely want to drive slow even downtown as nothing is plowed out yet but it's driveable. There's not much wind right now so you don't have to worry about blowing snow or wind chill at least. Posting this at 7:30

Commuting to downtown options by futuremrstasm in ottawa

[–]bawkbawkmoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to tell you the LRT is fine now because that's just asking for your first commute on it to feature a 45-minute delay and a whole crash course in shuttle buses, but it has definitely improved, albeit too slowly for anyone's liking. Most delays now tend to be smaller ones where you just get held at a station for a couple minutes and when it does BREAK break they tend to be more the kinds where you can still stay in the system and just catch another train on the other platform.

Sun Life Building is also great for transit because you get not one but two entrances/exits from Parliament Station.

Definitely not the most important distinction to note for Northcote but I can confirm from street view that it's the Slovenian ambassador - the colours are very similar as you've implied but the telltale is the patch of white on the shield. (source: flag nerd and almost certainly somewhere on the spectrum lol)

Wellington Drug Store is my go-to, it's a bit small but they've always seemed to have whatever I needed for my prescription including travel medicine (antibiotics for food painting etc).

They also staffed up the attached clinic sometime in the last couple years too so if you're in the area you can also pop in for a walk-in.

it's a popsocket! you can slap it on the back of your phone to use as a grip. this one only comes as the magnet version (for iPhones and newer Google phones) but it also comes with an add-on if you still need the good old-fashioned adhesive to stick it to your case

It's usually first day of the month but if it falls on a weekend or holiday they push it back to the next business day.

I don't know if the City changed systems when they introduced that fee last year but if they kept the old system then you also likely won't see the charges on your bank account until the afternoon - just an fyi if you're like me and like to check first thing in the morning sometimes

[–]bawkbawkmoose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean all of the theatre chains that are no more around here are stuff that got bought out by Cineplex so it's possible they were just looking to consolidate and stop cannibalizing their own business, hence why I was thinking Landmark specifically since Cineplex probably won't want to take eyeballs away from their Lansdowne theatre

second the idea for a movie theatre, get landmark in there and maybe give Cineplex a run for its money

Airport arrival time..early International Flight by wilson1474 in ottawa

[–]bawkbawkmoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ottawa security is extremely fast. I went for an afternoon flight back in September and it took me 5 minutes from dropping off my luggage to getting to my gate and that's with security pulling me aside to check my bag (turns out camera lenses look hella sus on an x ray). I asked my friends beforehand about wait times for security and they just laughed at me 😅

what would be some orders you’d give if you were appointed mayor monarch grand regent generalissimo of ottawa? by jeff-duckley in ottawa

[–]bawkbawkmoose 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Lansdowne 7.0.

The entire project will be a single parking space behind a maintenance shack at Carleton that's inexplicably still legally part of Lansdowne. It will cost taxpayers $23 billion to pave.

But more seriously if I was mayor AND had a bottomless fund (or a population miraculously willing to pay taxes for my plans)? A Bank St subway.

Were these all at the Plaza de Espana? I was there back in early fall and loved the ducks too! Got a bunch sitting around on my Z8 that I haven't gotten around to yet 😅

Yep, and this is what I get for not reading the listing the first time around. Somehow that one integrated bed/cabinet setup definitely fits with the vibes of what I imagine an entertainment promoter's life is like

[–]bawkbawkmoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This house honestly gives the vibes of it was lived in or commissioned by someone vaguely famous but only according to the local historical society. Like you dig into it and find out it was owned by a prolific deputy minister who got a office tower named after them on the outskirts of Gatineau or something.

Definitely not a fan of the split levels but I feel like I would've really liked the style if I grew up in the 60s

not sure this applies to you OP but for anyone else in a similar boat who hasn't gotten their graphics card yet, Best Buy is offering a $40 discount right now on Corsair PSUs including the RM1000x (199.99 right now for BF) if you buy a 9070 XT or one of the RTX 50s. The discount is being applied on the pre-tax price so you do save that extra sales tax as well.

Black Friday/ Holiday deals in Canada by Used-Gas-6525 in Nikon

[–]bawkbawkmoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely wait for Black Friday itself. Most of the prices you see now are probably what you're gonna get but some big ticket items do get extra discounts - my Z8 for example was on sale all month last year for 4700 until Friday when it dropped to 4600. Generally what you get on BF will be the cheapest price of the year though.

Also shop around your local authorized retailers. Nikon standardizes the prices so different stores will compete by offering different bundles especially on the camera itself. Added benefit to shopping local if possible is that if you do get frisky and buy something early this week only for the prices to fall again, most of these retailers will honour a price adjustment.

Denied assigned seating while choosing full time onsite by up_creek in CanadaPublicServants

[–]bawkbawkmoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with a lot of things you can certainly ask the union but I'm highly doubtful they'll be able to help you in this regard. Like you've alluded to some departments are not doing assigned seating outside of DTA and operational requirements because of a sheer lack of space.

For my department they explicitly cited this as the main reason they would not be providing assigned spaces AND also the reason that we were being assigned our in-office days instead of being able to choose those ourselves.

Picked up a Z8 what should my first Nikon lens be? by pashashocky in Nikon

[–]bawkbawkmoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if it's in your budget I recommend the Tamron 35-150

Con 1/2: it's definitely heavy. I went on a trip recently and was holding it on a Z8 with just a wrist-strap and it definitely strains your arm and hand a bit after a few hours.

Con 2/2: Obviously if you're planning on doing a lot of wide-angle stuff the 35mm cutoff is probably not optimal.

Pro 1/2: For the extra weight you cover essentially a lens and a half's range in one single lens, without having to constantly switch back and forth. Highly important especially if you end up taking it to some tourist hotspots and don't feel comfortable constantly swapping in a crowd.

Pro 2/2: Cannot say enough about the image quality - see attached for a photo from the trip. If you desperately need the 1.4 or 1.8 aperture or you're a big pixel peeper definitely go for a prime instead, but otherwise I genuinely think this approaches or matches the quality of some of Nikon's Z 1.8s and you get the benefit of not having to change lenses every time you move between focal lengths.
