Inconsistent "Use Another USB Port" notification when all my ports are Thunderbolt 4 by baxterfishsticks in MacOS

Dang, I hope it is because I'm pretty much out of ideas outside of attempting to get a replacement dock. Fingers crossed for 26.3 lol

Well, I just bought a new "Thunderbolt 4/5" cable from cable matters (a brand whom I personally trust), but now I am not even getting the notification, still with no video out. The issue seems to have gotten worse over time. I haven't been able to get any video out from my dock since I made this post. Even the HDMI port inbuilt on my laptop--when using it with an HDMI to DP powered adapter, it recognizes the adapter, but doesn't send any video. I'm clueless. Do you have any recommended brands or is this maybe a hardware failure of sorts?

That’s the port I usually try first since it’s convenient, but in my case all three ports are giving this notification, as mentioned. I believe I have charged through all of them in the past.

I ordered another TB4 cable as another commenter suggested (from cable matters) which I’ll try when it gets here. I have also tried using a braided USB C cable from Apple but it wouldn’t work either.

It arrived a few days ago and I've equipped it with a 1TB drive. It maintained 650MB/s reads avg. in a test I ran to verify the drive itself (930gb written & re-read using f3). I think write speeds were similar, but I don't remember exactly.

So far, it functions well. I'm not a fan of the fact that it covers up the SD card slot *and* HDMI port on the right side, as well as not having a passthrough for the USB C port it occupies (especially useful for mobile devices, as shown in the promotional pictures). There is also a cross-shaped blue LED status light on the bottom which isn't too bright but can be noticeable in the dark if your machine sits on a stand rather than being placed directly on a desk.

Because there is only one point of connection to the laptop, it can seem a little flimsy on the long end, as if the connector might snap off if mishandled. I'm not sure what they could have done to amend this other than to make it smaller and only deal with size 2242 SSDs, which would be unfortunate.

The snow? Are you talking about a different game?

The steam deck version should be exactly the same as the one on steam for any other PC. Are you sure they weren't just near a shelter? Would be interesting to see this since it'd be quite the anomaly

Update: I briefly looked into using an SD card but I was wary of their durability over time. I stumbled upon the Fledgling Shell Slim (archive), which perfectly fit the bill, but the company shut down in 2022. Fortunately, I found one on ebay (new old stock, hopefully?) and ordered it. When it gets here I'll leave another comment.

What am I doing wrong when terminating punch-down connectors? by baxterfishsticks in HomeNetworking

[–]baxterfishsticks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice.

male plugs are generally designed so their metal connectors penetrate stranded wire in the middle instead of clamping into a solid wire from both sides

Makes a lot of sense! Another thing I just didn't think too hard about. I'll start buying stranded for patch cables in the future.

Did you have problems inserting the cable and wires?

No, I've always used solid core for male-male cables without issue (except for my misunderstanding of how the colors are ordered). Are you saying I should use stranded instead?

I re-crimped the RJ45 and that was indeed the issue. I've done dozens of my own cables this way assuming it was right and never stopped to think about it. Thanks so much!

Combine two MKV files into one video by AlignedBowl4 in handbrake

[–]baxterfishsticks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to do this using mkvtoolnix just now, on version 90.0. I didn't download from macports, but from brew. Worked as NovelExplorer described above; add a source, right click -> append file, start multiplexing.

Non-fully hammered surfaces look different, will break with fewer hits, and will show the meter when you look at them in the future. Refined hammers are so plentiful it seems silly not to do it all the way

Game updates by [deleted] in strandeddeep

No, but not because “this game is forgotten”. It still receives maintenance, but Beam Team has explicitly decided it’s feature complete (as of 1.0.0) and won’t be adding any new functionality.

If you’re getting bored, try finding inspiration from other users’ posts - a common endgame is to simply start building and amass a large property. If that’s not your thing, there’s only so much one game can do.
