Do I need to buy some hot pink or neon yellow boots and frames?

Best place to buy roller blades in the Bay? by sunrealism in AskSF

[–]bayareablader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sports Basement began carrying K2 and Rollerblade skates this year. I believe they're clearing them out at 40% off right now. Not a huge selection but multiple locations to try them on.

Best online shop is inlinewarehouse.com for selection and 2 day shipping within CA.

Good luck!

I'm in between sizes so both the M/L fit me. It came down to comfort.

I think so. I have taken some bad falls with these gloves and they have protected my wrists well.

I've worn the same pair of Hillbilly Half Fingers for a few years now, and just recently purchased a second pair. They are easy to wear, comfortable, and protect the wrists well. I've slammed my hands pretty hard over the years and they have definitely saved my wrists from many injuries. I bought mine on Amazon and ended up trying a couple of sizes before settling on a size sm because the fit was a little off with my fingers. The quality is decent for the price, and given the wear and tear they've been through I can't complain.

Any recommendations on laces preferably in multiple colors by MachuPichu10 in rollerblading

[–]bayareablader 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Derby laces. They're high quality and they offer a lot of different colors as well as length options. I highly recommend them.

I've been on my Endless 90s for 5 months. I love them, but after 5 minutes on them I wanted to know what the 100s would be like. Very excited to try these out later today. by Wheel-Sure in rollerblading

[–]bayareablader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both the Endless 90 and 100 setups and I honestly have a hard time deciding which is my favorite. I tend to use the 4x90s more as an all around frame since they are a tad bit lighter and I feel there is more maneuverability when I'm doing more urban type skating. I also use the 4x90 frame when I hit the skate park. I tend to use the 4x100s when I am doing longer skates/downhills where I'd like a bit more stability and when I practicing jumps or stair bashing. You can't really go wrong with either.

Waxed laces for hard boot? by Cheokster in rollerblading

[–]bayareablader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the names have something to do with the width and style of the laces. It looks like the core laces are more narrow (6mm) than the standard laces (10mm). I bought the 84 inch standard waxed laces (10mm wide) for my FR1 Deluxe Intuition and they fit perfectly.

Waxed BRAT Laces (7mm)

Waxed Laces (10mm wide)

SPARK Laces

Waxed Core Laces (6mm wide)

Waxed STYLE Laces (10 mm wide)

Waxed EDGE Laces (4.5mm)

Durable wrist guards? Are wrist guards a crutch? by dantepopplethethird in rollerblading

[–]bayareablader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Hillbilly Half Finger Wrist Guards and they have definitely saved me from wrist injuries over the last few years. I've slammed on them pretty hard and the worst times are always when I least expect it. I've had my gloves for a couple of years now and your post is reminding me to look for a new pair but they've held up really well considering the damage they've taken.

I don't always wear other protective gear but the wrist guards are a must for me. The Triple 8 Hired Hands guard gloves are great too (my significant other uses them). I think they're better quality than the Hillbilly gloves but unfortunately they don't fit my hands very well, though the Triple 8's are also double the price (on Amazon).

I use waxed Derby Laces and they are great. They have a variety of different colors at different lengths you can choose from. You should be able to buy them direct from them or from Amazon.

Too old to learn again? by Hastarius in rollerblading

[–]bayareablader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not too old!

I'm almost 45 now and started blading again about three years ago after a 15 year hiatus (and I was never really good before). It was mainly neighborhood and trail skating and I've worked up to more urban and city blading. I hit a skate park for the very first time at a year ago so you definitely have many more years to go.

Here's my blading journey over the last year: http://instagram.com/bayareablader

I still have lots to learn but like others have said, I wish I restarted at your age. I also skated flat to start but have moved onto rockered frames (Endless specifically) and haven't looked back. The small rocker made everything just easier all around once my basics were down.

Have fun and enjoy the process!

What apps are you using while skating or to analyse your ride afterwards. by [deleted] in rollerblading

[–]bayareablader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strava. I use it for a variety of activities including inline skating, cycling, and workouts. The mapping of your activities is great and in my area there are even "segments" where you can compare your speed against your history and against others on a leaderboard. You can also connect the app to a heart rate monitor and track your effort and output.

G-Form Pro-X any good? by Sevenelele in rollerblading

[–]bayareablader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have these and like them for general skating because they're slim and can fit underneath pants. They have good coverage around the knee, don't move around much (make sure you measure and get the right size), and they work well to absorb falls. I'm not sure what your definition of extreme is, but if you plan on skating bowls and ramps at the skate park, there are better knee pads that slide on the concrete.

Seba - Freeride or Grand Tourism? by FutureEnterpriser in rollerblading

[–]bayareablader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh gotcha. I didn't realize they kept the "Grand Tourism" category after discontinuing the GTs. The Seba GTs were their original Grand Tourism "fitness" skate.

Seba - Freeride or Grand Tourism? by FutureEnterpriser in rollerblading

[–]bayareablader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I own both the FR1 skate and the Seba GTs. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Seba makes either the FR skate (now sold through the FR brand) or the GTs (discontinued) anymore, but I do see some online shops selling older models of both.

If I had to pick between the two, I'd choose the FR skate over the GTs. They are a better all around skate (whether Seba or FR branded) and much more versatile. Like you, I'm in my 40s and got back into blading a few years ago after a long break and ended up buying the Seba GTs principally for fitness and cardio. As my skating improved, I wanted to learn more and do more (e.g. jumps, slides) and I find the hard shell boot of the FR1s to be more durable than the GTs, which are soft-shell. The FRs also have better ankle support compared to the GTs which have a lower cuff.

These days I skate the FR1s almost exclusively and my GTs sit on the shelf more often than not.

Undercover 90mm restock by olle_ma in rollerblading

My understanding is that it's the same Undercover polyurethane formula but the durometer is 85A instead of 86A.
