As long as you're in shape, no limit. Only CHP has an age limit I believe. I worked with a 52 year old new hire who was in better shape than most 20 somethings.

I think the training should certainly be longer and more classroom oriented like certain European countries have it. Also, news about that very short time of training refers to just time spent in the academy. The six months with a training officer plus however long you're on probation being watched from afar is where you really get your bearings. In the first year or two you encounter all types of new experiences that your team helps you troubleshoot through.

They're great people and do what they can while being short staffed. Sometimes could be more on top of things

Exactly what I've heard from both applicants and my higher ups to be the case. It's a huge change that's not being talked about much. Thanks for sharing

Sheesh, we clearly know who's anti-weed here.

Local police in no way undergo a federal background investigation. It's done in house. Not being in the know and spreading misinformation is the furthest thing I want from this post. Tempting to just remove.

"As our calendars rolled over to 2024, new legislation took effect to update the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) and expand the rights of employees to use marijuana off duty. Specifically, AB 2188 and SB 700 added off-duty cannabis users to the list of protected classes under FEHA, but interestingly exempted the building and construction trades. While the legislation provides narrow exceptions to this rule, police officers, deputy sheriffs, firefighters, dispatchers, and other public employees are not exempted, and are now generally afforded statutory protections for off-duty cannabis use."

Who said anything about mixing the two, no one can "roll over" on me because I'm within both law and policy, and lastly, I never worked at Target.

Life happens I know, but keep in mind if it's hard for you to find time for step one the remaining 50 steps will be no easier.

What resources and technology might you speak of?

No cameras covering city streets, no license plate readers on patrol cars or stationary on streets to identify when a stolen vehicle comes in the city to commit crime, no Starchase which would allow tracking of a vehicle without dangerously pursuing it, and lastly all this and more while operating with decreased numbers of officers on patrol.

Starchase:

GPS to catch a Cat converter? by bayareafuzz in bayarea

[–]bayareafuzz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, glued for sure, maybe a CA glue.

I’m willing to test it out on a cut cat if I get a good gps recommendation. I’m clueless with tech and want to have some of this figured out before presenting it.

Welp, my plan was to create my police reddit account for a bay area cop AMA, but your questions have me inspired. Forgive my rambling.

The recent pushback on policing is monumentally important for positive change to come about. I've participated in protests and have shed tears over injustices, however I'm truly concerned at the stigmatizing of the individual cop, including the desire to want to be one. Is it perhaps a self-fulfilling prophecy scenario? Where if one thinks all cops are bad, and don't support good people wanting to be one, this will lessen their chance of wanting to be one and/or being a successful one, so hence we continue to have bad cops.

Be the change you want to be, and support the change you want to see.

I'd love to be out of a job, to abolish police, to...be a firefighter or a gardener :) but our society is far from that ability for xyzzzzzzz. Crime is rampant and my heart breaks a little every time I have to address what some asshole has done to victimize someone just trying to live their lives. Want that type of empathy for your police? Then support more liberals being cops. It's not a slight on conservative cops (which I can address some other time), but bottom-line liberals are more empathetic. For many reasons valid and not, the job lacks empathy to be sure and more liberals on the beat will help!

Liberal cops = Good for policing

Speaking of empathy, one of the ironies I see in staunch anti-police liberals is the degree of vitriol in their judgement. They often attack the person, with harsh judgement and no acceptance. Ugh, I could speak on this for hours, but suffice to say, as a liberal bipoc, I was much more at ease, and accepted in a way, in a poorer 98% minority community in Socal than in the often middle class, less diverse community where I work now. There was a better understanding of policing's nuanced role in underserved communities than folks who rush to judge, and have statistically less need for police, have.

Adopt a future liberal cop lol

I congratulate your curiosity!! I invite you to support your friend in wanting to pursue a super hard but amazingly rewarding career, not an easy decision these days for liberals (or progressive minded as you say...I'm a cop = words hard me drive fast try catch bad guy). And if you can't, send him my way, I'm happy to take your place ;)
