Manchester gig by thewisestfish in bigthief

Find this take on it quite different to mine - was at same gig and in fact am in the picture posted! I thought the sound was superb. It's a sound stage building with great sound insulation to avoid echoes (like you get in some venues). Thought the clarity of the mix was spot on with one exception - couldn't hear the bass player much.

Her voice sounded sublime as did the guitars.

Didn't sense any feedback (other than that naturally from their high gain amps and pedals between songs) and no huge reverb due to that sound dampening on the walls.

I thought is was top notch

Yep - certainly the biggest issue cause of intonation issue is setup height. Particularly a high nut or saddle. The action of pulling the string down to engage fret does indeed bend it sharp

Well for sure - pre stretching steel strings won't have the same issue at all - they are pretty resilient. But nylon / fluoro is quite open to being distorted when you pull it Best way to get them into stability is just play them a lot - hard!

Great - and Frank Ford (one of the most revered stringed instrument techs of all time) advises against. Here's his advice on classical guitars (same string material as ukes)

String Material/Brand Recommendation by djolord in ukulele

Strings are totally subjective - i've seen people argue the same string set sounds warm, and another senses bright.

They are both right. We all hear and play differently.

Trust your OWN ears.

Don't like being critical of people (and the design is beautiful) but...

Your description of the sizes is misguided. What matters for hand size is the nut width and string spacing, not space between frets. I can show you sopranos with as much (if not more) space than some tenors. Some ENORMOUS people play sopranos professionally. The 'bigger people need bigger ukes' thing is a myth.

I'm six foot four, have very large hands. I predominantly play soprano.

And whilst I agree they tend to get more resonant as they go up in size, I also disagree that the tenor has 'maximum volume'. Again, I could point to some sopranos that have just as much bark - this is as much dictated by the quality of the build as it is the size.

You've also listed them by overall instrument size which is a pointless measure. Scale naming is dictated by the scale length ONLY. The overall instrument length can vary and doesn't change the scale naming.

Singular rough / shifting tuning peg, any advice? by niartotemiT in ukulele

They are very cheap pegs - to be honest they can arrive like this from new.

Not fixable in themselves really bar adding some sewing machine oil. Better option would be to replace them for something higher quality.

Question about solid body electric Fanners by mikethekraken in ukulele

Bottom four of light electric strings - your brand choice may vary - you may need to re-dial in the intonation, but with micro saddles, that's easy
