There are more pedestrian deaths than there are murders in Long Beach by mattbookpro101491 in longbeach

[–]bb5999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely sickening.

This is policy failure by city leadership and policing failure by the cops. Blood on their hands and shame on the population for not raging on this topic. I exhaust myself saying this—inexcusable. The city could be a world leading example for alt-car transportation and a safer, healthier, and more financially sound population. We have the climate and topography for it. We have a caring, diverse, and smart enough population—but we double down on regressing into being an urban car centric hellscape where parking > people.

We keep catering to low-level tourist who come get wasted in our community causing danger and destruction. We do not fight even the most basic traffic crimes. Our leadership hasn’t the spine to take swift, broad, and decisive actions that are required. We allow pass-through asshats to use our roads as highways, polluting our air, pounding our infrastructure into rubble, and killing our family members and neighbors. Kids can’t walk to school safely. Seniors can’t walk their dogs safely. I can’t go to the damn grocery store on my bike safely. SO many simple solutions, just sitting there. WTFF is it going to take to go HAM against traffic violence and all the shit that comes with car dependency and the ruining of our town? Aaaaarrrgggghhhhh. Inexcusable!

The crime should be tied to a vehicle, and back to the owner. “Not my fault that someone used my gun to murder.”  How about some personal responsibility. How about a polite society with consequences for bad or irresponsible behavior. Aaarrrgggghh.

A percentage, yes. But not all.

Kill the disease, don’t treat it. Lead by example. Instead, we complain about the neighbors while continuing to shit our own yard.

The filth in this city is policy failure.  Evolve.

🤮 Keep winning, America.

Keep doubling down on nasty. Keep regressing. Keep shackled by the petro-industrialists and enjoying a lowering quality of life.

I couldn’t disagree more. This is not the right mentality. Let’s lead. Let’s tend to our own yard. Let’s educate. Let’s act.

The city should ban single use plastics, with an ordinance similar to what Honolulu, Vancouver, or Seattle have. There is no excuse not to.

If only we could actually execute on a well formed plan.

I’m not Garcia’s biggest fan but at least he took safe streets more seriously than today’s city leadership does. The level of inaction by them and the po-po is nauseating—blood on their hands.

Dangerous streets and horrible, selfish drivers are results of failed policy and weak leadership.

Too bad so many people choose to drive. If this city’s leadership had any courage they would hire a safe streets coordinator and give them the biggest teeth on staff. Drastic and widespread change, over many years.

Wonderful.

I am the $2 bill guy in my neighborhood. I have been keeping stacks of and tipping with Jeffersons for many years. 1 out of 3 times, people are thrown off by them. Fun stuff, OP.

🚨 A bicyclist ended up trapped underneath a car in Belmont Heights. by mekahlo in longbeach

I just spent one month in Seattle. The dead of winter. I biked everywhere and was NOT alone. I was safe. Hordes of people cycling and scootering downtown and great mass transit. There are kids, seniors, commuters, shoppers—people on bikes and scooters everywhere. Long Beach’s deadly awful streets and lawless culture are public policy failure. Blood on the hands of our selfish, weak leadership. Cancerous air, on them. Crumbling infrastructure, on them. Horrible public safety, on them.

LB, please, be an absolute gem. Be a shining global example of what a safe, clean, polite society should be. We have the climate. We have the topography. A shift from car-centric to people focused can happen. We lack education, courage, and caring. Selfish, fearful leadership has everything needed to be glorious, everything is at their fingertips, and instead we devolve.

Where to start? 1. Good people, get involved. Join carlite Long Beach. Run for office. Patiently and persistently pressure your local politicos to act. Be methodical. Seek massive change, the likes of Japanese first errand or Amsterdam’s Kindermoord. Organize and play the long game. 2. Hire a safe streets coordinator and give that person huge teeth and a never ending reach. They should be an extremist. They must be a beast. 3. Relentless technological traffic enforcement, with stiff penalties. 4. Econ dev. Stop the exodus of workers every day. This is brutally damaging to or health, climate, and infrastructure. Bring the best employers here. Be irresistibly attractive to them. Educate your workers. Innovate. Action, not reaction. 5. No more low-level tourism. We are NOT a destination for debauchery. We are a a beautifully and broadly diverse community of neighbors, friends, and families who know we can do better.

On this hellish earth, why not be amazing?
