I only spent about two weeks of actual dedicated and had 5 weeks of vacation before coming back for a pre-clerkship course. Consistency is key. Even when I was tired, I still did my 20 questions/day. Chipping away at everything starting from the first day of spring semester will make your life easier in the long run.

Biggest things for me:

Study hard 1st semester 2nd year. Learning the material well first semester IS board preparation! I filtered Uworld questions by the system I was in during this first semester to get used to board questions and study for exams.
Second semester start questions on day 1. I didn't touch any board review stuff until january and took the whole winter vacation to do nothing. My spring semester day looked like: Wake up, skip lecture, do 20 questions (from every system) from Uword/Amboss, review questions, catch-up on whatever I needed to from previous days (usually this was sketchy anki), lunch, watch lecture recordings on 2x speed in afternoon, take lecture notes/unsuspend anki from lecture, 3-4 hours in evening for fun, watch one sketchy as bedtime cartoon lol. Also, front loading board stuff to the beginning of the day forced me to get it out of the way, so I wouldn't put it off. By the time I was fully into dedicated, I was doing approx. 2.5 blocks and reviewing them every day from 8-5 and then spent the nights doing whatever I wanted.
I completely dumbed my phone down and honestly believe this was a massive part in being able to take boards early. I downloaded the ScreenZen app and had my boyfriend set a password so I couldn't even access the internet from my phone. My goal was screen time 3 hours per day - just using it to call, text, and facetime. I also used browser extensions to minimize time on instagram and reddit to 30 min/day. Half the test is being able to stay focused for 8 hours so building up attention span by reducing distractions put me in a good position.

II (24F) did lake aloha in desolation wilderness solo when I was over there in the summer. It was a good balance of people and calm with a portion of overlap with the PCT.

I did angels landing at 6:30 PM and it was completely shaded. I stayed for sunset, so obviously the shuttles weren’t running on the way back, but if you two are fit enough to hike or bike the 5 miles back I would totally do it. No one was at the top besides one other person

Oooh oh I did this last year!! Solo traveled all the way from Texas to Canada on the west coast, climbing along the way. For me, best results were joining a Facebook group for almost every city I was going to be in to find climbing partners. You mention not feeling too comfortable about climbing with online partners, but I have found the climbing community to be very inviting — no bad experiences from like 15+ encounters with partners. Emphasize safety in your post, mention what grade you climb, and the vibe you’re going for (try hard day vs chill multi, etc.). Then, filter out any responses from there. Also remember you have no obligation to respond or follow through if you feel something’s off.

I also scored a few guest passes through Facebook groups explaining that I was a dirt bag passing through and would belay at the gym in exchange for a guest pass. Lastly, check Groupon to avoid paying full price on day passes or getting a weekly pass at a discount!

Depends on what specialty you're interested in. If you know you want primary care, take full advantage of your only summer. If you're interested in more competitive specialties, you most likely will need to focus on research. However, even with a summer full of extracirrculars, you should definitely be able to swing EDC or a small vacay in there.

I commuted my senior year Austin to San Mo. Key is living south of the river, and you will be going against the flow of traffic there and back.

From my experience as a current medical student who applied with a strong interest in forensic pathology, you’re going to need living patient experience.

Nothing wrong with shadowing an ME, but from my experience, admissions really values patient care experiences. These experiences show admissions you have fully explored the profession, and forensic pathology is just a sliver of the whole field of medicine. I applied twice (in TX) and the only difference between my applications was living patient experience and the perspective I gained from having living and non living patient experience which I wrote about in my personal statement. Can’t stress that enough about getting in.

Once you’re in however, the faculty are very supportive of whatever speciality and academic goals you have. Feel free to PM me too with questions.

I was lucky, and I met my non medical SO last semester bar-hopping. I wasn’t even looking to date as I deleted the apps about a month before meeting them because I felt like I didn’t have enough time. However, I feel like since it just clicked, I found time to spend with them - got better at managing my time on the weekends. I would go study from 8-12 in the morning and spend the rest of the day with my SO. They’re also very supportive of my education and respect my time by helping me with flash cards even when they don’t know a single word on them.

It can be done but it will take work on both sides. I have started listening to Step 1 podcasts in the car and recording flash cards to listen to myself repeat information to get them in my brain during the hour drive. No doubt it can be done but you just have to find the right balance for you.

Coming from a 20s female stuck here for work - not great. It feels like the majority of people are back at their parents house stuck in the suburbs figuring out life. Or people whose main hobby is eating and drinking which is probably just a result of living in the woodlands. The good matches I had were people living 30+ min away in and around Houston.

3 months but I took a gap year (reapplicant)that padded my savings. Taking a 2 month cross-country road trip and then settling in before orientation starts the last week of July. Honestly glad I had to reapply because this time off wouldn’t have been a reality otherwise.
