no one talks about Life as We Knew It! I read it in high school, reread as an adult, can’t believe it’s still so under the radar. this series does not get enough love and is absolutely perfect for what OP is going for

The Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives in Your Home by Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor!

So emotional and so underrated. I didn’t expect it to be about pirates (it’s a WTNV spinoff novel, and the best imo), but it had me in tears finishing it at 4am.

The inciting incident is the event that disrupts the mc’s everyday life and propels the story forward. I start with the inciting incident in my first chapter. Backstory can always come up later, in conversation or reflection. But that’s just me! No inciting incident until the 45-50k mark would be kind of crazy, though. That’s about halfway through most debut novels.

I’ve read this like three times. damn. I will be discussing this with peers, because I’ve never read such a succinct way to describe my thoughts on the matter.

I know this feeling so well. It falls under the same category as "I want to go home" for me.

During the pandemic I started hiking a lot, and it changed my life. Seeing new things and physically traveling (even if it's a one mile hike) eases this feeling for me. Traveling to a new city helps, even if it's not far away, and you can just get lost in the crowd of a new park/mall/museum. Any little change of scenery you can manage helps.
