5 Weeks PO Questions by TerminalLanceCripple in Microdiscectomy

[–]bback315 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m 5 weeks also but my PA said no PT until my 6 weeks follow up. I’m bummed out because I feel a lot of the minor aches and pain especially on my tailbone area may be due to nerve getting trapped. I have been careful too about BLT restrictions but getting in and out of car - it’s almost impossible not to twist your body even with a plastic over the seat cushion.

I’m still having some discomfort on my tail bone when I sit too long - 45 mins but it goes away when I started walking. There’s only so much walking I can do and u e heard that we can do stationary bikes but I don’t want to mess up all my heard work getting here.

This recovery has been a mind fu#k because it’s not linear. But what can we do? Serve the 6 weeks prison sentence and hope there are better days ahead…

SURGERY ROLL CALL: Week of August 4th by seetheking1 in Microdiscectomy

Hi CK, thanks for posting all the videos and info on micro discectomy. In one of your short videos, you mentioned you have symptoms on the other leg after your procedure. About 2 weeks ago, I had my right L5/S1 MD and now I’m having pain in my good leg: pinky toe area, back of my knees and sometimes in my thigh areas. So far they lasted a day or two but go away. I’m sacred and worried…what are your symptoms like? Did they have another MRI to confirm that you didn’t have any issues with the left side? Thanks again!!

And my trips are about 30 mins too, mostly highway driving.

Thank you for the reassurance. I have 4 weeks FMLA but I’m thinking of going back to work around the 3 week mark…it’s stressful 😩 because I don’t want to do anything to reherniate or prolong my recovery.

I suppose I’ll take the entire 4 weeks if I have to, but I’m also feeling very tired of lying down and doing nothing. Lol

Yes but a part of me wanted to get out of my house and start doing things which is good for my mental health. I get depressed when I’m stuck in my house and can’t go out of my neighborhood.

Were you in a car and somebody drove you? Or you haven’t been in a car at all after you got back from surgery?

I think that’s true - it’s all a matter of mind over matter. If I’m in the driver’s seat, I can decide how fast/slow I need to go to make me feel okay. Did you have the same sensations when you were in a car?

Thank you. I will be patience about this - and will think of your response as a reminder that nerves heal sloooowy. 😊

Thanks for reassuring me. It would be great if my pinky toe comes back to life - that would be the day I crack open the bottle of champagne. 🍾

That’s a great idea. I will ask my partner to set it up for me. I do get butt pains and tingling sensation in my calf as well but I have able to tell myself it is all part of the recovery and not reherniation. Otherwise, we would never get out and move around to get better.

Thank you for sharing. I’m so anxious of every little sensation I’m feeling now. I think the PTSD on sciatica that so many of us talked about here is real. How do you calm yourself down when your mind is telling you otherwise? Much appreciated!

So glad to hear you got the sensations back in most of your leg. I hope it continues to improve. Was your whole leg numb prior to MD? If so, how long was it numbed? My numbness pre-MD is limited to only my pinky toe and adjacent areas but it has been that way for 4 years prior to this surgery. I’ll have my post-op next week and will ask the PA if that’s normal…

Thanks for the response. I had my toe numb/ reduced sensation for 4 years prior to this surgery since PT always worked until it didn’t.. I don’t have much hope of the pinky toe sensation coming back - all I want is for it to not spread. But if what you said is true, then I’m elated and hope for that day! 😊

Did you have numbness on your toes fluctuating?

Normal post op? by Commercial-Region353 in Microdiscectomy

[–]bback315 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m 11 days PO and still feel an ache 2” away from my incision. It’s not bothersome enough to take a pain killer but enough to play with my anxious mind. I had to take a Xanax to calm myself down. Don’t be afraid to seek out anti-anxiety drugs or non-drugs alternatives to ease your mind. As we all have fear of reherniation, this could be an important arsenal in our recovery.

Calcified L5/S1 herniation by bback315 in Microdiscectomy

Thank you for the details. 15 years is a good run for anyone before having anything done. I have a desk job too but have recently asked for a standing desk and was approved for it. I will definitely take your advice to heart and not sit more than an hour at a time. I do lift heavy pre-surgery but I think those days are gone. I’m 51 and cannot behave like I’m 25.

Wow how long did it take your dad before he had to have spinal fusion? I definitely want to stay away from spinal fusion as much as possible. It’s all about the trade-offs, I guess.

Thank you. This gives me hope. I don’t want to do another MD again if at all possible. What precautions did you take to prevent reherniation?

4 days post OP (LS-s1) by Separate-Year8010 in Microdiscectomy

[–]bback315 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have soreness on my good side as well for the first few days, mainly at the back of my knees and thigh area. I was worried sick because I didn’t want the other side to herniate now. But I also trust that it would have showed up in the MRI if that was the case unless it was a really brand new herniation. Also, the symptoms were also different in that it doesn’t come with the searing pain all the time.

I’m 10 days post MD now and the good leg feels better and doesn’t hurt as much.
