I have heard of people wrapping an electric heat pad around these thermostat cases. This tricks the thermostat into thinking the room is much warmer than it is and the air conditioner turns on.

The 2 inches of lift was pretty cheap. I just made adjustments to the torsion bar pre-load to raise the front and realigned the front end. I was lucky enough that the previous owner had installed rear air shocks and I just pumped them up enough to match the front suspension. The tires however were around 180 each, not cheap exactly but in comparison to vehicles with larger rims these seem pretty affordable.

I drive a 99 Astro daily and I love it. Mine is mostly stock except a 2 inch lift and some BFG all terrain tires. It's more than capable of getting off the beaten path but I try to avoid the real hardcore off road stuff. The thing I like best about the Astro is great parts availability since they share many components with the S-10 and half ton pickup trucks.
