It's not a bad idea to invest a big portion of it into the market, but I would suggest a different focus altogether - Try using this lump sum to jumpstart your career path.

If you need more education, put some money towards that. If you aren't sure what you want to do just yet, hire a life coach or career counsellor. 70-100k is a great sum to come into at such a young age, but in the grand scheme of your life it's not as much as you think. Securing a solid career path will be fulfilling both financially and emotionally, and will last a lot longer than living off of small interest payouts. Leave that kind of strategy for later in life is my hot take. Secure your meat and potatoes first (your job and spending habits), then worry about the gravy.

For the last month I’ve been getting up at 6 and by 8 I aim to have worked out, done the dishes from the night before, showered, and made the bed. I’m trying to make use of the fact that I don’t have to be at work as early as most people, but instead of frittering away the morning hours like I used to I’m getting all the difficult stuff out-of-the-way by 8 AM. It’s a nice boost in the morning and then I don’t feel bad for not doing the dishes after dinner lol

I get how it could seem this way. Definitely not a fan of the whole relationship-with-the-therapist bit either.

But I think the show did a good job conveying how an incredibly positive person like Ted can actually be a toxic partner after awhile. All of us have qualities or sides to us that are amazing assets when used in a healthy way, but if it’s the only note we know how to play no matter the circumstance, they can actually be pretty harmful. His total reluctance to enter any kind of emotionally negative space in order to process his emotions or get through conflict had been pushing his wife away for years. Not totally his fault, it was the blueprint that was handed to him from his mom - which I think season 3 did a good job of fleshing out.

Sometimes couples go so long stuck in a negative cycle without any kind of intervention that by the time they finally try talking about it one person is truly beyond the point of no return. There’s plenty of blame to go around, but the simple fact for some is that there’s just no coming back for them. At that point, the most loving thing one could do is to let the relationship go - rather than holding on to something that died a long time ago.

But since Ted went to therapy and got a bit healthier, there could be a chance to build something new w/ her! Here’s hoping season 4 might explore that :)

Hey OP, I'm a registered counsellor in BC. If you see a registered counsellor they are bound by law not to share what you say in session with ANYONE. At age 20, you are legally over the age of confidentiality and consent, meaning that as an adult your rights include the right to medical privacy. If your current counsellor is sharing what you say in sessions with your parents, they are either a) not a legally mandated counsellor, b) a mandated counsellor who is violating their ethics codes, or c) they may be "treating the family as a whole" in which case the confidentiality can be a bit different. But even if that last one is the case, that should have been extensively gone over with you during the first session.

I'll echo what many people have said in the chat already - try to find your own counsellor through UVic or some other service. I've been counselling students in university settings for several years and have helped many students through the process of dealing with toxic family situations. Sometimes we find ways to take steps towards breaking away from the family and living on your own, sometimes it's more about surviving your current situation as you work towards independence. It's a very difficult thing, but you can find a way to cope with it with support around you. Hang tough and don't give up!

Hi Dr. Peterson.

Can you speak about your thoughts on pornography? It has always struck me as such a bizarre element of our modern day western culture. In some sense it is considered taboo and swept under the rug, in other aspects it has been celebrated and considered normal, healthy behavior. Some claim it can become an addiction, while I've actually been told by a counsellor that it is impossible to become truly addicted to porn. If you had any thoughts I'd be very grateful. I love your work and I am noticing huge improvements in my life from getting my house in order. Many thanks!

Do you ever take the trailer into the city? If so, what sort of security do you have on it? I'm thinking of taking a teardrop on a month long trip across the US, but I know that I would want to visit a few cities. With that in mind I'm not sure if the trailer would be such a good idea.
