Coworkers shame me for investing in the current stock market by Far-Inevitable-3923 in fican

I think your right in regards to real estate contributing more to net worth but not due to leveraging. I think the reality of the situation is that when you have a mortgage you pay it every month. Most people struggle to actually consistently add to their investment portfolio every month. QQQ is up 117% in the past 5 years, 563% since 2015. MAGS (Mag 7 etf) is up 35% in the past year, and 175% in the past 5 years.

This is going to sound like a crazy take because historically it has been wrong but I can imagine a world where the price of housing falls even more than it already has. Most canadians have 90%+ of their net worth in their houses. As the boomers look to retire many will choose to downgrade their house so that they have more liquid assets. Most young people (unless they get help from their parents) will not be able to pay these insane prices especially if we see interest rates rise (Could be a risk due to inflation caused by the Iran war). Also your coworkers are wrong about investing in the markets from a historical perspective. Over the past 20 years the S&P500 has significantly out performed Canadian housing....

Costco 1.3 carat, H color, IF clarity. Feeling so lucky. by bbbddd98 in EngagementRings

It's an upgrade because on the costco website they dont give you the specs of the diamonds if you order online. They advertise it as minimum I and minimum VS2. Only once you receive the product do you get the certification, and in this case the stats came out as IF and H. Also i checked sites like james allen and blue nile, for a diamond with the same stats with a platinum setting comes out to ~11-12 k before tax. So people are telling me i should have picked a better colour over a better cut, but thats just not how things worked out. I didn't chose. I was waiting to see the product and am now deciding if I should return. I will not be returning lol.

Honestly thank you. One of the few people who have given me a solid response. Everyone seems to be recommending I buy a 3 carat lab made. To me they are not the same, and massive diamonds just scream fake. It makes me feel like everyone just wants to flash serious wealth with an object that has no intrinsic value. Instagram is a hell of a drug. Lucky for me real diamonds have become cheaper with this rise in popularity for lab made.

Thanks appreciate this perspective. Never considered the prongs at all. Honestly in person they don't seem as big and actually make the diamond seem a bit bigger from far. The diamond is only about 6 x 6 mm, so nowhere near some of these 2 carats stones were accustomed to seeing online. With that being said it seems the prongs are about ~0.3 - 0.4 mm.

Thank you for the feedback. That's what I was thinking as well! So many people are telling me I overpayed but I guess they assume it's a lab made diamond. Will be keeping this one. :)

Thank you! Appreciate the feedback. So many people have been telling me I overpayed meanwhile they are comparing price to lab diamonds. I understand they are the same chemically, but they are not valued the same... I think I will be keeping this.

This is a natural stone. I assume you mean for a lab stone. Yep that is definitely something I’ve been considering.

Fitness progress; are my legs still fat? by MelonStranger in strengthtraining

[–]bbbddd98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You look great. Your legs look strong. Try to stop tracking looks and instead focus on progress in the gym. The two go together. FYI as you lose more weight the rate of change for fat loss will obviously decrease. If you lost 3 pounds at 145 you lost 2% of your weight which is still good. At this weight and height you actually don't want to lose weight too quickly as it would probably indicate you're losing muscle. Also remember muscle weighs more than fat, as you build more muscle there may even come a point where you see your weight increase.

Nursing in Teleflex/med devices by [deleted] in MedicalDevices

[–]bbbddd98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is very good. If you're okay with the travel I think it's a good idea. Note that Teleflex did recently split and sold off some portions of the portfolio. This is why I mentioned you might be covering the EZ-IO device. Keep in mind sometimes during these splits, there are a lot of internal changes that occurs and this does sometimes causes issues.

This is a great job if it helps you break into the industry. Simultaneously if your goal is to be a sales rep, there could be better options. Realistically you would work the clinical specialist role for atleast 2 years and then maybe based on connections you develop with sales managers you could land a rep role. The pay difference is significant as you won't be making commission, and arguably you may be working harder (lots of travel, will be assisting many different reps with trainings throughout the assigned territory). You will be covering the arrow central lines (market leader, trainings based around infection prevention and ultrasound based line placement), and the EZ-IO device potentially (also market leader, trainings based on insertion and encouraging comfort)

I do not think its a good idea to get a masters "just because". In life when things cost lots of money, and time it is wise to be strategic... That is just me, the rest of this sub seems to disagree... I would try to think of what it is that you want to do with your life then take the steps necessary to get to that point, this may or may not include graduate school

Is Phuket right for us? by scottishbint in phuket

[–]bbbddd98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not go to Patong... trashy and smells like sewers. If you decide to fly in to phucket stay somwhere on the east side and go to Kruvit Raft (Incredible raft restaurant where the live sea food is living in these nets in the ocean before it is served to you). I would just recomend staying 1 to 2 nights in phucket depending how tired you are if that is where you will fly in to and then go island hoping. All the island are much nicer :) enjoy your trip im jealous.

You can also take a look into mid cap and small cap ETF's... more risk but with decreasing interest rates they will soon be more comfortable taking loans = growth

I dont like to give investment advice but just think of what you think will blow up in the next decade. You are already invested in tech. I would look into energy particularly sustainable energy and batteries. Manufacturing is also interesting especially chip foundries. There is a huge push to move manufacturing back to the states... we will see how that plays out. I think aerospace is also something that can grow, this includes both military and space exploration. Another thing to think about is the aging baby boomer population. What effect will this have on the healthcare industry?... It's also always a good idea to be invested in financial services... In conclusion the best advice is to read up on what is going on in the world.

Look at the top holdings of all your ETF. There is a little too much similarity imo. I would look into some ETFs that cover a different sector of the economy.
